Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.
The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,
casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast.
Victor Hale stood in the center of the ballroom with one hand clenched at his side and the other holding back the emerald fabric of his daughter's gown.
Claire Hale did not move.
She had spent twenty minutes begging him not to make a scene, but the dark purple bruises across her exposed back had already made silence impossible.
At Victor's feet, his son Adrian was on his knees in a black tuxedo, his face wet with tears and his hands trembling against the hem of Claire's dress.
"Dad, please."
Victor looked down at him with the cold disappointment of a man who had just discovered that cowardice could wear his own son's face.
"Don't ask me for mercy before you tell me why your sister looks like this."
Guests who had been laughing over champagne minutes earlier now stared at the family as if the wedding reception had become a trial.
Claire kept her chin high, but her breathing was shallow.
Then Victor turned toward the bride.
Celeste Arden stood beside the abandoned wedding cake in a strapless white gown, her blonde hair still pinned perfectly beneath a crystal comb, but the smile she had worn all evening was gone.
Her eyes were wild.
Victor's voice thundered across the room.
"Look at the monster standing before you!"
Several guests gasped.
Celeste stepped forward.
"How dare you call me that in front of everyone?"
"Tell them what you did."
"She tried to ruin my perfect day!"
Her voice rose until it cracked.
"She deserved it!"
A woman near the dance floor covered her mouth.
Adrian stared at his bride as though he were seeing her for the first time.
"Celeste, stop."
"No, you stop."
She pointed at Claire.
"She has hated me since the day you proposed."
Claire finally spoke.
"I didn't hate you."
Her voice was quiet enough that the entire ballroom leaned toward it.
"I was afraid of you."
Celeste's face changed.
For one second, the rage disappeared and something colder took its place.
Victor saw it.
So did Adrian.
"I'm sorry," Adrian choked out.
Claire looked down at him.
"You had months to be sorry."
The sentence landed harder than a scream.
Celeste suddenly lunged.
She moved so fast that two guests stumbled backward.
Her hands reached toward Claire, but Victor stepped between them.
Celeste swung at him.
Victor caught her wrist, shoved it aside, and delivered one sharp defensive slap that turned her face and sent the heavy skirt of her gown spinning across the polished floor.
The room froze.
Celeste touched her cheek in disbelief.
"Sorry!" she shrieked, the word dripping with mockery.
Victor stared at her with absolute disgust.
"You aren't entirely dead to this family yet, Celeste."
He paused.
"But the part of you that thought our name would protect you just died in front of two hundred witnesses."
Celeste's expression twitched.
Then she smiled.
It was small, almost invisible, and far more frightening than her rage.
"Two hundred witnesses?"
She looked slowly around the ballroom.
"You really think that's what you have?"
Victor's eyes narrowed.
Celeste lifted her hand and snapped her fingers.
Every screen in the ballroom went black.
The music died.
May you like
The chandelier dimmed.
And somewhere behind the locked service doors, a woman screamed.
