Chapter 2: The Collapse

Phones started buzzing across the ballroom.
One by one.
Guests checking their screens.
Watching.
Rewatching.
The whispers turned into gasps.
Then silence.
The kind of silence that destroys reputations.
The bride—Lillian—took a step back from Preston.
“You said she stole it…” she whispered.
Preston grabbed her arm. “This is out of context—”
She pulled away.
“Out of context?” she repeated. “You planted it on an eight-year-old.”
My father stepped forward. “We can fix this—”
“No,” the hotel manager interrupted, louder this time. “You can’t.”
Because the police had arrived.
Two officers walked in.
Then a third.
“Mr. Preston Hale?” one asked.
For the first time in his life…
Preston didn’t speak.
He looked at me instead.
As if I would save him.
I didn’t.
“You’re under arrest for assaulting a minor,” the officer continued, “and for filing a false accusation.”
The handcuffs clicked.
Loud.
Final.
My mother gasped. “This is a misunderstanding!”
The officer didn’t even look at her.
“Ma’am, we have video evidence.”

And just like that…
The golden child fell.
