Chapter 1: The Sirens Break the Silence

The sirens didn’t just grow louder.

They tore through the illusion.

Red and blue lights flooded the ballroom windows, staining the ivory walls with something far more honest than elegance—truth. For the first time that night, people moved. Not out of loyalty. Not out of courage.

Out of fear.

Paramedics rushed in, pushing past stunned guests. One of them gently pried Sophie from my arms. Her small body trembled, her eyes barely open, her lashes clumped with tears and blood.

“Stay with me, sweetheart,” the medic whispered.

I followed them step for step, my hands still shaking, my heart still too quiet.

Behind me, voices rose.

“What’s happening?”

“Did he really hit her?”

“No—there must be some mistake…”

But the truth was no longer hiding.

It was bleeding.

Two police officers entered moments later. Their eyes swept the room, trained, alert—and then stopped on Preston.

Still standing there.

Still frozen.

Still pretending.

“Sir,” one officer said, calm but firm, “we’re going to need you to come with us.”

Preston let out a short laugh. “You’ve got to be kidding. This is my wedding.”

The officer didn’t blink. “We received a call reporting an assault on a minor.”

The word landed like a hammer.

Assault.

Not a misunderstanding.

Not a family issue.

A crime.

Preston’s gaze snapped toward me. For the first time, there was something new in his eyes.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Fear.

And then—

“Check the cameras,” I said quietly.

The officer nodded once.

“Already on it.”
