Chapter 10 - The Backup Above the Hall.

Helen drove back to Blackwood Hall faster than Naomi recommended and slower than panic demanded.
Police vehicles were already at the gates.
The north wing remained dark.
The rest of the mansion glowed under emergency power.
Adrian met them in the foyer.
Blood ran from a cut near his temple.
Helen grabbed his arm.
"Lucy?"
"Safe."
"Margaret?"
"With her in the library."
Helen released him.
"What happened?"
Adrian pointed toward the chandelier.
The white camera dome hung crooked from its mount.
A maintenance ladder lay on the marble floor.
Caleb sat against the wall holding an ice pack to his shoulder.
"Someone came through the service passage behind the paneling."
Naomi looked at the dark wood.
"There is a passage?"
Adrian gave a humorless laugh.
"Apparently my house has been keeping secrets from me too."
The intruder had used the missing brass key.
The camera's internal card sleeve was open.
The storage card was gone.
Helen's heart sank.
"We were too late."
Caleb shook his head.
"Maybe not."
He held up a small black device.
"The camera mirrored local storage when the sleeve opened."
Naomi looked at him.
"To where?"
"The old recorder."
Adrian stared.
"Thomas built a booby trap for the archive."
"More like a redundancy trigger."
Caleb connected the recorder to an isolated laptop.
A new file had appeared at 6:14 p.m.
The filename was N3-1117-47.
Helen felt Samuel's code return.
They played it.
The missing forty-seven seconds from six years ago began.
Thomas and Adrian were arguing beneath the chandelier.
Adrian's younger face was furious.
Thomas pointed toward the red folder.
Adrian shouted something the silent video could not capture.
Then Adrian reached up and disabled the network feed through a wall panel.
The internal camera continued recording.
Adrian walked away.
Thomas remained standing.
For eight seconds he appeared alone.
Then Olivia emerged from the library.
Adrian gasped.
"Olivia was there?"
Margaret had entered quietly with Lucy and stopped behind them.
She looked at the screen as if seeing a ghost.
Olivia handed Thomas a small memory card.
They spoke intensely.
Then Olivia left through the north corridor.
Twenty seconds later Dorian Pike entered.
He was not alone.
A second man followed.
His face was partly hidden.
Thomas backed away.
Dorian opened the red folder.
The second man moved behind Thomas.
Thomas suddenly clutched his chest.
The second man steadied him rather than letting him fall.
Dorian removed a small bottle from his pocket and placed it inside the red folder.
Naomi leaned closer.
"Medication?"
Adrian whispered, "Or poison."
The second man turned enough for the camera to catch his profile.
Margaret made a sound Helen had never heard from her.
Not a cry.
Not a gasp.
Recognition without defense.
"Miles Kessler."
The doctor who signed Thomas's death certificate.
The video continued.
Dorian and Kessler lowered Thomas to the floor.
Dorian looked up at the camera and smiled.
Then he removed the red folder.
Kessler checked Thomas's pulse.
Both men walked away.
Thomas was still moving.
The video ended.
Adrian covered his mouth.
"They left him alive."
Naomi nodded.
"Which means we still don't know what killed him."
Margaret sat down slowly.
Lucy stood beside her.
The child did not understand the details, but she understood grief.
She placed her small hand on Margaret's arm.
Margaret looked at her, then began to cry silently.
Helen's anger softened only slightly.
Naomi replayed the last ten seconds.
"Look."
As Dorian turned away, something fell from the red folder.
A small blue rectangle landed near the grandfather clock.
Thomas moved one hand toward it.
The timestamp reached 11:17:47.
The clip ended.
Caleb checked the recovered mirror files.
There was another file.
N3-1118.
It had no duration listed.
They opened it.
The screen remained black.
Then Thomas's voice whispered through a hidden microphone.
"If you found this, I was right about Pike."
Adrian stared.
Thomas continued.
"But Pike is not the one you should fear most."
Margaret gripped the chair.
The recording hissed.
"The person behind him is family."
The recovered forty-seven seconds changed Adrian more than any accusation against him could have.
For six years, he had remembered his father dropping one hand toward his chest during their argument.
His mind had replayed that gesture until it became a verdict.
Now the internal recording showed Thomas straighten after Adrian left, walk several steps, and speak normally with Olivia.
Adrian had not caused the immediate collapse he imagined.
The relief was almost unbearable because it arrived beside a new guilt.
His decision to give Dorian the legacy password had helped expose the archive.
Margaret told him both things could be true.
He could be innocent of killing Thomas and still responsible for a terrible mistake.
Adrian stared at the floor.
"I spent six years choosing the guilt that made me the center of the story."
Helen looked at him differently after that.
Self-pity had protected him from asking who actually benefited from Thomas's death.
Once that protection cracked, Adrian became useful to the investigation.
He remembered details he had dismissed before, including Dorian asking repeatedly whether Thomas ever used removable storage in the old cameras.
At the time, Adrian thought the questions were about deleting footage.
Now they sounded like a search.
The audio ended.
No name followed.
Helen looked at Adrian.
Adrian looked at Margaret.
May you like
Margaret looked at Lucy.
For the first time, the silent woman in gray looked afraid of what the child might inherit besides money.
