CHAPTER 3: The Breaking Point

Two days later, the first lawsuit hit.

Then another.

And another.

Families began to come forward—hesitant at first, then unstoppable. Stories poured in like floodwater breaking through a cracked wall.

A nurse named Lila stood in front of the review board, shaking as she spoke.

“I tried to report him,” she said. “Three times.”

“What happened?” the chairman asked.

Her voice cracked.

“They reassigned me. Said I was ‘unstable.’”

The room fell silent.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

Evan hadn’t just built authority.

He had built fear.

And fear had done the rest.

Later that night, I found Mia sitting alone in her hospital room, staring at the city lights.

“Do you think it’s enough?” she asked.

“No,” I answered honestly.

She looked at me.

“Then why does it feel like something changed?”

I smiled faintly.

“Because it did.”
