Chapter 5 - The Signature They Needed.

Sarah took Claire's phone without touching the message thread.
"Do not respond."
Claire stared at Harold's text.
"He knows what I watched."
"Or he wants you to think he does."
"He said video."
"Yes."
Sarah's jaw tightened.
"Which means we assume the archive account is compromised."
She called an information-security consultant used by her firm.
Within minutes, the laptop was disconnected from the network and the archive was being copied through a protected forensic process.
Claire stood near the conference room door, listening for footsteps that never came.
Building security stopped Harold in the lobby.
He did not leave immediately.
Instead, he called Claire twelve times.
Then Evelyn called eight times.
Then Noah's father, Mason, called twice.
Claire ignored them all.
Sarah returned to the blue folder.
"We need to understand exactly what this agreement was designed to accomplish."
Claire sat down.
The adrenaline left her suddenly, and exhaustion rushed in behind it.
"Fine."
Sarah placed the agreement beside Daniel's trust documents.
"The trust owns the Hawthorne Ridge property."
She pointed to another schedule.
"It also owns forty-two percent of Bennett Development Group."
Claire stared.
"Daniel owned that much of the company?"
"Through debt conversion and inherited shares, yes."
"Harold always said Daniel barely cared about the business."
"He may not have cared about running it."
Sarah tapped the page.
"But he cared about preventing it from collapsing."
The next document showed several loans made by the trust to the company.
Some were repaid.
Others were not.
Claire traced the numbers.
"How much do they owe Lily?"
Sarah turned to the final column.
"At least one point eight million dollars."
Claire laughed from disbelief.
"They made my daughter eat burnt food while they owed her almost two million dollars?"
Sarah's expression did not change.
"The cruelty and the money are separate legal issues."
"They're not separate to me."
"I know."
Sarah opened the proposed waiver.
"If you sign this as Lily's trustee, Harold can argue that the trust released the debt and surrendered the property interest."
"Can I even legally do that?"
"Probably not without court approval because Lily is a minor."
Sarah turned another page.
"But litigation over an invalid waiver could still take years."
Claire understood then.
Evelyn and Harold did not need a perfect document.
They needed confusion.
They needed delay.
They needed a grieving widow who did not know what she owned.
"They were counting on me not fighting."
"Yes."
Claire looked toward the door.
"And now?"
"Now they know you are fighting."
The information-security consultant called forty minutes later.
Sarah put the phone on speaker.
"We found a second administrator on the camera account."
Claire leaned forward.
"Who?"
"The username is HBennettAdmin."
Harold.
Sarah closed her eyes briefly.
"Can you determine when it was created?"
"Four days after Daniel died."
Claire felt a chill.
"How?"
"The original account recovery email was accessed from a device already authorized on the home network."
Sarah asked which device.
There was keyboard noise on the other end.
"A desktop called DANIEL-OFFICE."
Claire knew exactly where it was.
Daniel's study.
The room Harold had told her not to enter because it was too painful.
The room Evelyn had said she would pack herself when Claire was ready.
Claire stood.
"I need to go back to the house."
Sarah shook her head.
"Not alone."
"My husband's computer is there."
"And Harold is furious."
"Then bring whoever we need."
Sarah studied her.
"We can request a civil standby through local law enforcement if your legal right of access is clear."
"Make it clear."
Sarah began gathering documents.
"Before we do that, there is something else."
She handed Claire a bank statement.
The account title included Lily Bennett Trust.
Claire scanned the withdrawals.
Ten thousand.
Twenty-five thousand.
Forty thousand.
Some payments went to construction vendors.
Others went to a country club.
One went to a luxury car dealership.
Claire looked up slowly.
"What is this?"
"Preliminary transaction data."
"Whose car?"
Sarah checked a note.
"The dealership record lists Evelyn Bennett as purchaser."
Claire thought of the silver SUV Evelyn drove.
Evelyn had told everyone it was an anniversary gift from Harold.
Claire almost admired the confidence required to steal from a child and call it romance.
"How much?"
"Eighty-seven thousand dollars from the trust account."
Claire leaned back.
"They bought her car with Lily's money."
"It appears so."
Claire remembered every time Evelyn complained about the cost of Lily's cereal.
Every time Harold asked Claire to contribute extra money for utilities.
Every time they made Lily feel expensive.
The shame Claire had carried began changing shape.
It became rage with a ledger.
"Freeze it."
Sarah looked at her.
"What?"
"Whatever account I legally control."
Claire's voice steadied.
"Freeze discretionary distributions."
Sarah nodded slowly.
"We can issue notice to the trust bank today."
"Do it."
Sarah reached for the phone.
At 11:36 a.m., the bank acknowledged the trustee dispute and placed enhanced controls on the accounts.
At 11:52, Claire's phone rang again.
This time it was Evelyn.
Claire answered.
Sarah immediately began recording notes.
Evelyn did not say hello.
"What did you do?"
Claire looked through the conference room window.
"Good morning to you too."
"My card was declined."
"Then use your money."
Silence.
Claire almost smiled.
Evelyn recovered quickly.
"You have no idea what you are touching."
"I know you bought an eighty-seven-thousand-dollar car with Lily's trust funds."
Another silence.
This one was longer.
"Daniel approved that."
"Daniel had been dead nine months when you bought it."
Evelyn's breathing changed.
Claire heard the exact moment the older woman understood that the lie would not survive.
"Come home."
"No."
"Claire, we can explain everything."
"You can explain it to Sarah."
"That woman is poisoning you against this family."
Claire looked at Daniel's letter.
"No."
Her voice turned quiet.
"You did that all by yourself."
Evelyn's tone hardened.
"You think one ugly dinner gives you the right to destroy us?"
Claire's fingers tightened around the phone.
"It wasn't one dinner."
Evelyn said nothing.
"And now I have the videos."
For the first time, Evelyn sounded afraid.
"What videos?"
Claire looked at Sarah.
Sarah gave the smallest shake of her head.
Do not reveal more.
Claire smiled without warmth.
"The ones Daniel told me to start with."
She ended the call.
Less than a minute later, Sarah's office manager entered the conference room holding a courier envelope.
"This was delivered for Claire."
There was no return address.
Inside was a single photocopied page.
It appeared to be a letter signed by Daniel.
Claire read the first line.
If Claire becomes emotionally unstable after my death, I want my parents to assume guardianship of Lily.
Her blood went cold.

At the bottom was Daniel's signature.
And for one terrible second, it looked real.
