THE KEY SHE NEVER GAVE THEM / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2 - The Key in Her Bag.

Mark stood motionless for several seconds, as though the simple act of returning a key would force him to choose a side.

Diane made the choice harder by sliding her handbag behind her hip.

"This is unnecessary," she said.

Rachel kept her palm open.

"Then it should be easy."

Chloe looked from Mark to Diane.

"What key is she talking about?"

Nobody answered her.

That was the moment Rachel understood Chloe had not known how they entered.

Mark's shoulders dropped.

"Mom said you gave her a spare last year."

Rachel's expression did not change.

"I gave her a key for one weekend when I had the floors refinished."

Diane cut in quickly.

"And you never asked for it back."

"I did."

Rachel remembered standing on this very porch while Diane dug through her purse and claimed she must have misplaced it.

Rachel had changed the front lock a month later.

That meant the key used today could not be the old one.

"You copied the new key," Rachel said.

Diane's jaw tightened.

"Don't make it sound sinister."

"Then tell me when you got it."

Diane said nothing.

Mark finally stepped toward the handbag.

His mother stared at him.

"Don't."

He stopped.

Rachel saw the familiar reflex in his face.

At thirty-three, Mark still looked twelve whenever Diane used that tone.

Chloe touched his arm.

"Mark, give her the key."

He exhaled, opened the handbag, and searched inside.

Diane's face went pale with anger, but she did not stop him again.

Mark pulled out a bright silver key that looked almost new.

He placed it in Rachel's hand.

The metal made a light click against her palm.

Rachel closed her fingers around it.

"How many copies?"

"One," Mark said.

Diane answered at the same time.

"That is the only one."

Rachel noticed the difference.

Mark had answered the question.

Diane had answered the accusation.

Rachel put the key in her coat pocket and walked to the front door.

She opened it fully.

Afternoon sunlight cut across the hardwood floor.

Diane did not move.

"You're really throwing your own mother out?"

"I'm asking three people who entered my home without permission to leave."

"After everything I've done for you?"

Rachel almost laughed, but the sound never came.

That sentence had been Diane's emergency key long before she duplicated the metal one.

Chloe picked up her cardigan from the back of a chair.

"We should go."

Mark nodded.

Diane remained planted near the island.

"You don't need this house anymore," she said.

Rachel looked at the room she had sanded, painted, paid for, and protected.

"This is my house."

She opened the door wider.

"Get out."

Mark walked past first.

Chloe followed, whispering an apology Rachel was not ready to accept.

Diane stopped at the threshold.

Her voice dropped until only Rachel could hear it.

"You are going to regret embarrassing me in front of them."

Rachel met her mother's eyes.

"You embarrassed yourself."

Diane stepped outside.

Rachel closed the door and locked it.

Then her phone buzzed again.

The back-door camera had detected motion forty minutes earlier.

Rachel opened the clip.

And there, on the screen, Diane was handing Mark a second key.
