Chapter 8: The Digital Paper Trail

The storm broke as Daniel pulled into the driveway of the lake house. Rain lashed against the windshield in violent sheets. Inside, the fireplace was roaring, casting a warm, golden glow across the living room. Elena had put Leo to bed and was waiting for Daniel at the dining table, a laptop open in front of her.

He stripped off his soaked coat and sat across from her, summarizing the chilling encounter with Margaret. When he mentioned Aegis Meridian, Elena immediately began typing, her brow furrowed in deep concentration. Before she was an architect, Elena had worked in forensic data analysis—a skill that had originally brought her into Daniel's orbit years ago.

"If Vance is siphoning funds, he’s doing it brilliantly," Elena muttered, her eyes reflecting the blue light of the screen. "On the surface, the Carter Holdings ledgers are spotless. Every charitable donation, every green energy investment is accounted for."

"He wouldn't do it directly," Daniel said, pacing the room. "He’d use the philanthropic ventures as a front. Over-invoicing contractors, funneling the excess into dummy corporations, and washing it through international banks."

Elena’s fingers flew across the keyboard. "Let’s look at the community development grants in Southeast Asia. Vance pushed heavily for those last year."

For three grueling hours, they waded through gigabytes of financial filings, cross-referencing public tax records with the internal documents Daniel had access to as the majority shareholder. The clock ticked past two in the morning. The thunderstorm outside mirrored the turbulent dread building in the room.

Suddenly, Elena stopped typing. "I’ve got it."

Daniel rushed to her side, leaning over her shoulder.

"Look at this," she pointed to a series of transactions. "Carter Holdings awarded fifty million dollars to a logistics firm in Singapore for materials. But the shipping manifests don't match the expenditures. The materials were sourced locally for a fraction of the cost. The difference—nearly thirty million dollars—was routed through a holding company in Switzerland..."

"...and deposited into Aegis Meridian," Daniel finished, reading the final line of the routing data. His blood ran cold. Margaret was telling the truth.

"Daniel," Elena’s voice was barely a whisper. "I just ran a background query on the corporate officers of Aegis Meridian. It’s heavily redacted, but the digital footprint of the server hosting their private network is located in downtown Chicago. In the same building as Vance’s private law firm."

They had him. The proof was right there on the screen. But the triumph was immediately overshadowed by a chilling realization.

A red notification suddenly blinked on Elena’s screen. WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED DATABASE ACCESS DETECTED. TRACE INITIATED.

Elena gasped, slamming the laptop shut. "They have active countermeasures on the offshore accounts. The moment I bypassed the Swiss firewall, their security protocols flagged us. They know someone is looking, Daniel. And they have my IP address."

The house suddenly plunged into darkness. The hum of the refrigerator, the glow of the digital clocks, the soft light of the lamps—everything died at once. Only the flickering light of the fireplace remained.

Daniel instinctually moved in front of Elena. He looked out the window. The streetlights on the main road were still on. The power outage wasn't the storm. It was localized. Someone had cut the main breaker to the lake house.

"Get Leo," Daniel ordered, his voice steady but laced with a lethal urgency. "Go to the safe room. Now."
