Chapter 9 - The Greenhouse Meeting.

Ethan left Sophie with Elena, Daniel, and the nurse.

He asked the security supervisor to accompany him at a distance.

The north greenhouse stood beyond the formal garden, separated from the mansion by a gravel path and rows of winter hedges.

Rain had begun tapping against the glass roof.

At 10:31, Ethan saw a figure inside.

Marcus stood beside an empty potting table.

His tuxedo jacket was gone.

His white shirt was damp from the rain.

He raised both hands when Ethan entered.

“I’m not here to fight.”

“You helped her block my emails.”

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.”

“You helped her lie about my daughter.”

“I helped with the communications.”

“That is the same thing.”

Marcus did not argue.

Ethan wanted an excuse that would somehow make eight years of trust recoverable.

Marcus gave him none.

“Margaret told me you were collapsing after Nora died.”

“You saw me every day.”

“I saw you working sixteen hours a day and refusing to talk about anything else.”

“That gave you permission to cut me off from Sophie?”

“No.”

Marcus’s answer was immediate.

“It gave me an excuse to believe I was helping until I knew better.”

He explained that Margaret originally asked him to filter what she called disruptive household messages.

She claimed Sophie was adapting well and that Elena was creating unnecessary drama.

Marcus built the email rule himself.

Months later, he discovered the false school invoices.

Instead of telling Ethan immediately, he confronted Margaret.

That was his second mistake.

“She threatened to expose private company documents I had copied to my home computer.”

Ethan stared at him.

“Why did you copy them?”

“I was preparing for a financing meeting and violated policy.”

“So she had leverage.”

“Yes.”

Marcus looked ashamed.

“I kept telling myself I could contain it.”

“You contained my daughter instead.”

The words silenced him.

Ethan asked about the forged transfer.

Marcus shook his head.

“I did not authorize it.”

“Can you prove that?”

“I can prove who had the credential clone.”

He placed a small flash drive on the table.

Ethan did not touch it.

“What is on that?”

“System logs, copies of messages, and a recording from Margaret’s estate office.”

Ethan looked toward the security supervisor outside.

“Give it to him.”

Marcus did.

“I copied everything because I knew she was preparing to move money tomorrow.”

“Why not send it to me?”

“I was afraid she would destroy the rest before anyone could verify it.”

“That explanation does not make you innocent.”

“I know.”

Marcus looked through the greenhouse glass toward the mansion.

“There is someone else involved.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“Of course there is.”

“The fake vendors were not created by Margaret.”

“Who created them?”

“Daniel.”

Ethan stared at him.

“My cousin Daniel?”

Marcus nodded.

“He incorporated three of the companies.”

Ethan’s first instinct was disbelief.

Daniel was inside with Sophie.

Daniel had helped him all evening.

Daniel had looked horrified by every discovery.

Marcus continued.

“I don’t know whether he knew what the money was really funding.”

Ethan turned toward the mansion.

Through the glowing windows, he could see the upstairs guest suite.

A shadow moved behind the curtains.

Then his phone rang.

It was Elena.

Her first words turned the rain suddenly cold.

“Mr. Cole, Daniel is gone.”
