She had always treated that equity as security for Mia's future.
Ethan apparently treated it as unused money.
Rachel immediately contacted the mortgage servicer.
A refinance application had been started nine days earlier.
It had not yet closed.
The requested cash-out amount was $265,000.
Claire's name appeared as a co-borrower.
The phone number attached to "Claire" was not hers.
The email address differed from hers by one letter.
Claire stared at the screen.
"They made a fake email account."
Rachel nodded.
"And they were getting ready for another remote signing."
The proposed closing date was the following Tuesday.
If Claire had returned from her business trip on schedule, she would have been in a full-day strategy meeting when the signing took place.
The timing suddenly looked deliberate.
The balcony incident had not just been cruelty.
It had happened during a week when Ethan believed Claire was distracted and unavailable.
Rachel sent formal notice disputing the application.
The lender immediately froze it.
Claire then contacted a credit bureau and placed protective alerts on her file.
Every new discovery made her more determined to move carefully.
Ethan, meanwhile, grew less careful.
He sent a long email accusing Claire of "financial abuse" for redirecting her own paycheck.
He wrote that marriage entitled him to maintain the lifestyle they had built together.
He demanded that she pay Diane's household expenses until the divorce was resolved.
Claire forwarded the email without replying.
Rachel smiled grimly.
"He keeps documenting his priorities for us."
Two days later, the first temporary court conference was held by video.
Ethan appeared beside his attorney in a dark suit.
Claire sat beside Rachel.
The judge focused first on Mia.
Ethan's attorney repeated the claim that the balcony incident had been brief and misunderstood.
Rachel did not interrupt.
She waited until the statement was finished.
Then she submitted the security timeline.
The judge watched the relevant clips in silence.
At 5:36 p.m., Ethan appeared on screen and looked directly at Mia outside.
At 6:52, Mia knocked.
At 7:43, Claire returned.
The judge looked back at Ethan.
"Counsel, did your client know this recording existed when he approved the five-minute representation?"
Ethan's attorney asked for a moment to confer privately.
The judge granted it.
When they returned, Ethan no longer looked annoyed.
He looked frightened.
The court ordered temporary parenting exchanges through a neutral location.
Diane was not permitted to supervise Mia alone.
The judge also ordered both parties to preserve all financial and electronic records.
Claire felt relief, not victory.
Mia would be safer while the larger dispute unfolded.
After the conference, Rachel received an unexpected call from Ethan's attorney.
His tone had changed completely.
"My client wants to discuss resolving the financial issues quickly."
Rachel glanced at Claire.
"Which financial issues?"
There was a pause.
"All of them."
Rachel declined to negotiate without full disclosure.
Thirty minutes later, a courier arrived at the hotel.
The envelope contained copies of North Briar's accounting records.
One page listed dozens of transfers from the company to an unfamiliar name.
Claire traced the repeated recipient with her finger.
Caleb Bennett.
She looked at Rachel.
"Ethan doesn't have a brother named Caleb."
Rachel searched the public records.
Her expression changed.
"No."

She turned the laptop toward Claire.
"But Diane does."
