Chapter 10 - The Empty Cradle.

Panic wanted me to scream until my body broke.

Motherhood demanded that I become quieter than fear.

I replayed Grant's video and noticed a green reflection on the polished wall behind him.

Vale Meridian's gala ballroom had gold walls.

The abandoned Morrow laboratory beneath it used green surgical tile.

“He is underground,” I said.

Luka studied the recording.

“And the video is delayed by eleven minutes.”

Miriam sent the access credentials Vivian had provided.

Thomas recognized a service entrance inside an adjacent subway station.

“Grant wants the ledger because Eleanor will kill him if investors learn the therapy is stolen,” he said.

“Then Grant will be desperate enough to hurt Ava.”

“He needs her alive,” Luka answered.

“That is not the same as loving her.”

We entered the underground facility dressed as event contractors.

Thomas carried the false ledger in an equipment case.

Luka wore a security uniform that could not hide the tattoos on his neck.

I wore a Vale Meridian badge bearing Vivian's photograph.

The first corridor contained seventeen frosted doors.

Behind each one was an archived patient room preserved like a museum exhibit.

Room M-17 contained my mother's hospital gown, her wedding ring, and a bassinet labeled NORA BENNETT.

I had been born in that room.

A cracked monitor beside the bassinet still held one surviving video.

My mother appeared on the screen, pale and frightened, while Eleanor pushed a consent form toward her.

“I consent to treatment for myself,” Celeste said.

“I do not consent to testing on my daughter.”

Eleanor stopped the recording immediately after those words.

For twenty-five years, the proof of my mother's refusal had existed ten feet beneath a ballroom celebrating informed medicine.

My entire childhood began inside evidence someone had locked underground.

Ava cried through the wall.

I followed the sound into a surgical laboratory.

Grant stood beside an incubator while a machine drew blood from a line taped to Ava's heel.

I crossed the room before he could stop me and removed the needle.

“You are hurting your own daughter.”

“She is not mine.”

He raised a pistol but could not steady it.

Luka entered behind Thomas.

Grant aimed at him instead.

“You ruined everything when you signed that paper.”

“You ruined it when you walked away,” Luka said.

Thomas slid the ledger case across the floor.

Grant reached for it.

I lifted Ava from the incubator and backed toward the exit.

Steel partitions dropped from the ceiling.

One separated me from Luka.

Another trapped Thomas with Grant.

Eleanor Cross appeared on a monitor above us.

Her silver hair was swept into an elegant knot, and her voice held the calm authority I remembered from my fertility appointments.

“Thank you for returning my property, Nora.”

“Ava is not yours.”

“Neither was the blood in your mother's veins, yet the law allowed me to own what I discovered inside it.”

Smoke began filling Luka's sealed room.

He struck the glass, but it did not move.

The door behind me opened toward the subway tunnel.

I could escape with Ava or stay and watch Luka suffocate.

Eleanor smiled from the monitor.

“A good mother knows which life to choose.”

Then a timer appeared above Luka's head.

Eleven minutes remained.
