Chapter 4: The Box

I sat in the lawyer’s office, expecting closure.
Maybe even relief.
Instead, I got nothing.
The house? Left to her niece.
Her savings? Donated.
There was no mention of me… except one.
The lawyer placed a small shoebox on the table.
My name was written on it in Evelyn’s delicate handwriting.
“She said this is what you truly wanted,” he told me.
I almost laughed.
But my hands were shaking as I opened it.
Inside… was not money.
Not jewelry.
Not anything valuable.
Just a stack of letters.
And on top of them… a photograph.
It was me.
Sleeping in my truck.
Taken before I ever met her.
