Chapter 8 - The Sanctuary

The heavy oak front door of the Victorian house closed softly behind them.
The sound was a gentle, reassuring click, not the violent slam Clara was used to.
Inside, the air smelled warmly of cinnamon and fresh laundry.
Diane led her down a wide hallway decorated with soft, soothing watercolor paintings.
Faint sounds of children laughing drifted down from the second floor.
It was a stark, beautiful contrast to the sterile, terrifying silence of her old life.
"Let us get you settled into your room first," Diane said kindly.
They stopped in front of a solid wooden door with a small brass number seven on it.
Diane handed Clara a silver key attached to a simple, woven lanyard.
"You are the only person who has the key to this space," Diane explained.
"Not even the staff will enter without your explicit permission."
Clara took the key, her fingers tracing the jagged, cold edges of the metal.
The concept of true, guaranteed privacy felt completely foreign to her.
She unlocked the door and pushed it open.
The room was small but incredibly bright, bathed in warm afternoon sunlight.
A comfortable double bed sat in the corner, covered in a beautiful handmade floral quilt.
There was a sturdy wooden crib resting gently against the opposite wall.
Clara dropped her heavy canvas duffel bag onto the soft carpet.
She walked slowly toward the crib, her hands gently gripping the smooth wooden rail.
A fresh wave of overwhelming emotion crashed tightly against her chest.
"We have a wonderful doctor coming by this afternoon," Diane said quietly from the doorway.
"She specializes in prenatal care and will make sure both you and the baby are perfectly healthy."
Clara turned around, a profound sense of gratitude washing over her exhausted face.
"Thank you," Clara whispered, her voice thick with unshed tears.
"I do not know how I will ever repay you for all of this."
Diane smiled softly and stepped gently into the room.
"You do not owe us absolutely anything, Clara."
"Your only job right now is to rest and focus on that beautiful life growing inside you."
Diane quietly backed out of the room and closed the door behind her.
Clara stood alone in the center of the quiet, sunlit space.
She walked over to the edge of the bed and sat down.
The mattress yielded softly beneath her aching, heavy body.
She looked down at the angry, dark bruises still staining her pale arms.
They were painful, physical reminders of the monster she had finally left behind.
She gently touched her swollen belly, feeling another soft, reassuring flutter.
For the first time in countless months, she did not feel afraid of the coming night.
She kicked off her shoes and swung her legs up onto the handmade quilt.
She laid her head back against the plush white pillows and closed her eyes.

The heavy, suffocating tension finally drained from her muscles.
A deep, healing sleep pulled her completely under.
