Chapter 8 - The Man in the Other Car.

Vivian had spent fifteen years telling herself that silence had protected people.

Now Maren watched that belief collapse in real time.

"There was another car."

Vivian's voice was barely above a whisper.

"On the mountain road."

Ruiz pulled a chair closer.

"Start at the beginning."

Vivian stared at the photograph of Lila.

"My brakes failed near a switchback."

"You said you went off the road."

"I did."

"And another car?"

"A sedan was coming uphill."

Vivian pressed her fingertips together.

"I crossed the center line before I could turn the wheel."

Maren felt dread settle over her.

"Did you hit it?"

"Yes."

"Who was driving?"

Vivian looked at her.

"Daniel Crane."

Maren's stomach dropped.

"Lila's father."

"Yes."

The name explained the message on the photograph.

Vivian continued.

"Daniel died at the scene."

Maren's voice turned cold.

"So Lila lost both parents because of this family."

"Her mother died years later."

"In a fire you already said might not have been accidental."

Vivian nodded.

Maren looked at Ruiz.

"Lila didn't just walk into our house because Reed hired her."

"Probably not."

Vivian closed her eyes.

"I should have found her after Naomi died."

Maren's anger flared.

"Yes."

Vivian accepted the word.

"I was afraid approaching her would expose her."

"Or expose you."

Vivian looked at Maren.

"Both."

Maren admired the honesty and hated it at the same time.

Ruiz opened her laptop.

"Daniel Crane's accident report should exist."

Vivian shook her head.

"Not under his name."

"Why?"

"Charles paid to have the report altered."

"How do you know?"

"Thomas found the original dispatch log."

Maren leaned forward.

"Was Reed at the scene?"

Vivian hesitated.

That hesitation was becoming its own answer.

"Was he?"

"He arrived with Charles before the police finished processing the road."

Maren felt the old notebook pulling at her thoughts.

R.V. ASKED FOR THE BRAKE SERVICE RECORDS.

HE KNEW WHICH CAR SHE WOULD TAKE.

"Reed was nineteen."

"Yes."

"Did he know Daniel died?"

"Yes."

Maren turned away.

A memory surfaced from her wedding day.

Reed had cried during his vows.

He had held her hands and promised that whatever happened, he would never allow old family mistakes to touch their marriage.

At the time, the words had sounded romantic.

Now they sounded rehearsed.

Ruiz's phone rang.

She answered, listened, and stood.

"They found Graham Mercer."

Vivian's eyes narrowed.

"Where?"

"At his house."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

Maren almost smiled at the absurdity of needing the question.

Ruiz continued.

"He claims he has no idea why his name is connected to the freeze."

Vivian shook her head.

"He's lying."

"Maybe."

"Graham helped write the trust."

"He also says you threatened him this morning."

Vivian's face sharpened.

"I did not."

Ruiz read from her notes.

"He says you told him that if he didn't trigger Winter Glass by ten forty-five, you would release evidence proving he helped Charles conceal the mountain crash."

Maren looked at Vivian.

"Did you?"

"No."

"Can you prove it?"

Vivian reached for her phone.

"My calls are recorded under the protection agreement."

Ruiz nodded.

"We are obtaining them."

Maren looked at the photograph of Lila again.

"Someone is framing Vivian."

"Or Graham."

Ruiz's tone remained neutral.

Maren studied the message.

ASK VIVIAN ABOUT THE DRIVER.

"The person holding Lila knows private details from fifteen years ago."

Vivian nodded.

"Details only a few people knew."

"You."

"Yes."

"Charles."

"Yes."

"Thomas."

"Yes."

"Graham."

Vivian hesitated.

"Eventually."

Maren continued.

"Naomi Crane."

"Yes."

Ruiz looked at them.

"Anyone else?"

Vivian's gaze dropped to the notebook.

"Reed."

Maren's jaw tightened.

"But Reed is in custody."

Ruiz looked toward the hall.

"For now."

Maren caught the wording.

"What does that mean?"

Ruiz's expression darkened.

"Reed's attorney filed an emergency motion claiming the evidence was obtained through an illegal private surveillance operation."

"Can he get out?"

"Not easily."

"But possibly."

Ruiz did not answer.

The hospital television suddenly switched on by itself.

Every head turned.

The screen was black.

Then white text appeared.

MAREN, YOUR HUSBAND IS A MONSTER.

A second line appeared.

BUT VIVIAN BUILT HIM.

The screen went dark again.

Vivian walked to the far side of the hospital room and stared down at the traffic below.

"Daniel Crane had a daughter in the back seat that morning."

Maren's head snapped up.

"Lila?"

"No."

Vivian's voice was quiet.

"Her older sister, Paige."

"I never heard Lila mention a sister."

"Paige survived the crash with a broken arm."

Maren waited.

"Where is she now?"

Vivian turned.

"She died two years later from an unrelated illness."

Maren exhaled.

Another family had been shattered around the Vale secrets in ways nobody at the mansion ever discussed.

"Lila was seven when her father died."

"Nine."

"Old enough to remember everyone whispering."

"Yes."

Maren looked toward the door.

"And then her mother spent years investigating the people responsible."

Vivian nodded.

"Until the fire."

Maren felt a reluctant thread of sympathy for Lila and immediately resented it.

Sympathy did not erase the staircase.

It did not erase the smile.

But Maren was beginning to understand how revenge could be inherited the way money was.
