Chapter 5 - The Letter in Elias Vale's Desk.

Elena was discharged just after dawn with strict instructions to rest and return immediately if the cramping worsened.

Sebastian refused to take her back to Vale House.

They went instead to their apartment across the city, a place Vivian had always dismissed as temporary because it was not part of the family estate.

For the first time, Sebastian was grateful it belonged only to them.

Leah arrived with coffee, two security officers, and a sealed evidence bag containing copies of the dinner documents.

Celia Harrow arrived ten minutes later.

Sebastian nearly refused to let her inside.

Elena stopped him.

"She looked at the camera."

Celia stepped into the living room wearing the same black evening dress from dinner beneath a long coat.

Her face looked ten years older without makeup.

"I deserve whatever you think of me."

Sebastian did not offer her a seat.

"Start with why you laughed."

Celia flinched.

"Because Vivian was watching us."

"That's your excuse?"

"No."

She looked at Elena.

"It's my shame."

Elena's expression remained hard.

"Then tell us something useful."

Celia reached into her purse and removed a brass key.

"Your father gave me this four years ago."

Sebastian did not take it.

"Why would my father give you anything?"

"Because my husband wanted the merger even then."

"And my father didn't."

"Elias believed Vivian was feeding information to Andrew Harrow."

Sebastian stared at her.

Celia placed the key on the coffee table.

"He asked me to watch both of them."

"For four years?"

"At first."

Her eyes lowered.

"Then he got sick."

"And you stopped."

"I got scared."

Sebastian laughed bitterly.

"You were scared, so you sat at my mother's table and helped terrorize my pregnant wife."

Celia looked like she had been struck.

"Yes."

The honesty silenced him.

Elena asked, "Why did you look at the chandelier?"

"Because Elias told me the room had a memory."

Celia looked at Sebastian.

"Those were his words."

"Did you cause the seven-second gap?"

"No."

"Did you put the recorder in my coat?"

Elena asked.

Celia nodded.

"I recorded Vivian before you arrived."

"Then why did someone warn us not to trust it?"

Celia's eyes sharpened.

"Someone warned you?"

Sebastian showed her the message.

The color drained from her face.

"That isn't from me."

Leah asked, "Who else knows about the archive?"

Celia looked toward the brass key.

"Maybe the answer is where that opens."

The key fit a locked drawer in Elias Vale's private desk.

They returned to Vale House at nine fourteen under the escort of independent security.

Vivian was gone.

So were most of her personal staff.

The dining room remained untouched because Rosa had refused the cleanup order.

The overturned table lay like a wreck beneath the chandelier.

Sebastian walked past it without stopping.

Elias's study smelled of leather, cedar, and the faint tobacco scent that had survived him.

Sebastian sat behind his father's desk and inserted the brass key into the bottom drawer.

It opened with a soft click.

Inside lay one black ledger, a sealed letter, and a photograph of Sebastian at age nine.

He picked up the photograph first.

A red bruise darkened the side of the boy's face.

Sebastian's breath caught.

He remembered the day.

He remembered being told he had fallen against a door.

He remembered his father asking him three times what had happened.

He remembered Vivian answering for him.

He had not remembered the bruise.

Elena stood beside him.

"Sebas?"

He turned the photograph over.

Elias had written one sentence on the back.

THE EAST WING WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT.

Sebastian's hands went cold.

Celia whispered, "That's why he installed the camera system."

Sebastian opened the sealed letter.

My son, if you are reading this, then your mother has finally tried to turn your family into an asset she can control.

He stopped.

Elena placed her hand on his shoulder.

Sebastian continued.

Do not trust any summary of the Meridian Trust.

Do not trust the memorandum in Vivian's safe.

It was written for her to find.

Trust only the original instrument held by Nathan Cole.

Sebastian looked at Leah.

Leah's face tightened.

Nathan Cole was the senior partner of the family law firm.

He had also sent the emergency board notice the night before.

Sebastian read on.

If Vivian speaks of your child as an heir before she speaks of the child as a person, open the black ledger.

The last line was underlined twice.

AND IF NATHAN TELLS YOU I CHANGED MY MIND, HE IS LYING.

No one spoke.

Sebastian reached for the black ledger.

The first page contained a list of dates, bank transfers, property sales, and initials.

Beside a transfer of fourteen million dollars were two letters.

V.V.

Beside another entry, four million dollars, were two different letters.

N.C.

Elena whispered, "Vivian Vale and Nathan Cole."

Leah's phone rang.

She answered, listened, and immediately looked at Sebastian.

"The board meeting started early."

"How early?"

"Nine o'clock."

Sebastian checked the time.

It was nine twenty-three.

Leah continued.

"Nathan has already moved to suspend your voting rights."

Sebastian closed the ledger.

"On what grounds?"

May you like

Leah's mouth tightened.

"Violence, instability, and endangerment of an unborn heir."
