Chapter 3: The Dark Reveal

The oscillating blade of the cast saw vibrated intensely, though it was perfectly safe against skin. Dr. Evans worked with practiced precision, dragging the blade down the length of the solid white fiberglass.
"Noah, hold still," Dr. Evans said softly, her eyes entirely focused on the task. "I'm almost done."
Noah trembled, biting his lower lip. David held him steady, murmuring words of encouragement. In the background, Marissa was pacing. The rhythmic clicking of her heels against the linoleum floor betrayed her escalating panic. Her transition from a stance of aggressive authority to desperate anxiety was rapid and unsettling.
"Mr. Vale, stop her immediately," Marissa commanded, stepping aggressively toward the hospital bed. Her voice shook, lacking its usual polished control. "This is a serious violation. We have the right to refuse treatment!"
David didn't even look at her. "Back off, Marissa."
Dr. Evans finished the cuts on both sides of the cast. She set the saw down on the metal tray with a clatter. Taking a pair of cast spreaders, she wedged them into the groove she had just created.
"Alright, Noah. Deep breath," Dr. Evans instructed. She squeezed the handles of the spreader. The fiberglass gave way with a dry, hollow crack.
Dr. Evans gently pulled the top half of the white cast away. She began to peel back the layers of protective cotton lining. As the last layer was pulled aside, movement caught the harsh fluorescent light.
Nestled against Noah's raw, slightly inflamed skin was a dark, jointed shape. It twitched, its barbed tail whipping upward in defense. It was a live, dark black scorpion.
A collective breath hitched in the room. Dr. Evans, maintaining a fraction of her clinical composure through sheer willpower, tipped the cast lining. The scorpion tumbled out, landing on the sterile white hospital floor with a soft thud, its pincers snapping aggressively in the air.
David yanked Noah backward by his good arm, shielding the boy with his own body. "What the hell?!"
Marissa took a step back, her hands flying up to cover her mouth. Her eyes were wide, darting from the venomous arachnid on the floor to David’s horrified face. She was feigning disbelief, but the sheer terror in her eyes was rooted in the fact that she had been caught.
"That's impossible," Marissa gasped, her voice trembling violently. "I don't understand how—"
Dr. Evans slowly stood up from the stool. She didn't look at the scorpion. She looked dead center at Marissa. Her gaze was cold, piercing, and terrifyingly knowing.
"I think you understand exactly how," Dr. Evans said coldly.
The air in the room grew completely still, save for the clicking of the scorpion’s legs on the tile. The pieces fell into place in David’s mind with the heavy, sickening weight of a collapsing building. The mysterious fall. Noah's sudden terror of his soon-to-be stepmother. Marissa's desperate attempt to stop the cast removal.

David slowly turned his head from the discarded cast to look directly at Marissa. The man who had walked into the hospital an hour ago was gone. His expression shifted rapidly, the initial confusion vaporizing into an intense, betrayed, and dangerous anger.
"Marissa..." David’s voice was a low, dangerous rumble. "How could something like that get inside a sealed cast?"
