Chapter 2: Blood Beneath Marble

The silence was surgical.

Every eye in the room followed Julian as he stepped away from a circle of investors and walked—slow, deliberate—toward Clara.

Staff didn’t exist in moments like this. Not in front of people like him. Not in front of power.

And yet, he stopped directly in front of her.

“What’s your name?” His voice was low, controlled, but there was something beneath it—something dangerous.

Clara swallowed. “C-Clara, sir.”

A flicker crossed his face.

“Clara… what?”

She hesitated. Names had always been complicated. Temporary. Replaceable.

“Clara Vale.”

The air shifted.

Behind Julian, a woman dropped her champagne glass.

Lydia Vale.

Her mother.

“No,” Lydia whispered, her voice cracking in a way no one had ever heard before. “That’s not possible.”

Julian turned slowly.

The room held its breath.

“You know her,” he said, not asking.

Lydia’s composure—the kind that had been perfected over decades—collapsed in a single moment.

“I buried that truth nineteen years ago.”

Clara’s world tilted.

“What truth?” she asked, her voice barely audible.

But no one in that room was prepared for the answer.

Including Julian.
