Chapter 8 - Unit 217.

The Westbridge Storage facility sat behind a row of auto shops and a closed furniture warehouse.
Daniel arrived with Maya, Hannah, and the facility manager shortly after nine in the morning.
Sophie stayed with a trusted family friend whose name Tabitha did not know.
Daniel hated leaving her after everything that had happened, but he did not want her near whatever waited inside Unit 217.
The manager verified the paperwork.
Maya documented the condition of the lock and the time they entered.
Daniel used the small key from the hidden envelope.
The door rolled upward with a metallic rattle.
Dust moved through the beam of fluorescent light.
Inside were eight plastic storage bins, two cardboard archive boxes, a folded rocking chair, and three pieces of framed artwork Daniel recognized from Claire's childhood bedroom.
For a moment, the place did not look threatening.
It looked sad.
Then Hannah noticed the labels.
SOPHIE - SCHOOL.
DANIEL - WORK.
MEDICAL.
COURT.
Maya's expression tightened.
“No one touches anything until we photograph the layout.”
They documented each box before opening it.
The first bin contained copies of school calendars, pickup records, and printed photographs of Daniel's car arriving at home.
Some photos had timestamps.
Daniel felt watched across months he had believed were private.
The second bin contained printed social media posts from his company showing business dinners and conferences.
Tabitha had written notes in the margins.
Away again.
Late meeting.
Travel while child vulnerable.
Daniel shook his head.
“She used public posts to make it look like I was never home.”
Maya kept her tone clinical.
“That may be what she intended.”
The medical box was worse.
It contained copies of appointment summaries and handwritten logs similar to the blue notebook.
Several pages described episodes Daniel could not remember because they had apparently happened while he was away.
One date stood out.
He had been in the house that entire day.
The note claimed he was unreachable.
Daniel took out his phone and checked his calendar.
He had worked from home.
“This is false.”
Maya photographed the entry.
Hannah opened the COURT box only after Maya approved.
Inside was a draft guardianship petition dated five months earlier.
The language was less polished than the petition Daniel received.
It described a plan to establish a record of instability before filing.
Daniel read one sentence twice.
Caregiver should document every instance in which child appears distressed, especially in father's absence.
Hannah whispered, “Caregiver.”
Daniel turned the page.
A handwritten note listed T.V. and R.C.
Maya pointed to the initials.
“Do those mean anything to you?”
“T.V. is Tabitha Vale.”
Daniel stared at R.C.
Then he remembered Claire's cousin, Richard Cole.
Richard had called twice after Claire's funeral offering to help with finances.
Daniel had politely declined.
Richard worked in property management and had once argued that family assets should stay under family control.
Daniel felt the shape of the scheme widen.
The next folder contained bank statements from an account Daniel did not recognize.
Maya stopped them from reviewing the details until she could determine whether they had lawful authority to examine them.
Then Hannah found a sealed envelope marked FOR TABITHA.
Because the unit had been Claire's and the items were potentially relevant to litigation, Maya documented the envelope but advised Daniel not to open it until ownership was clarified.
Daniel agreed.
He did not want one reckless decision to damage the credibility of everything else.
At the back of the unit stood a small fireproof box.
The manager confirmed it was listed among the unit contents in an old inventory note.
Daniel opened it with a second key found taped under the lid of Claire's archive box.
Inside was a flash drive and a handwritten card.
Daniel recognized Claire's writing again.
If this is being opened because Mom challenged Daniel, give the drive to my attorney.
Daniel handed it directly to Maya.
She sealed it in an evidence bag she carried for documents.
Hannah exhaled slowly.
“Claire really planned for this.”
Daniel looked around the unit.
“She was afraid enough to plan for this.”
That difference hurt.
Maya closed her case folder.
“We take the drive to Robert Ellison.”
Before they could leave, Daniel's phone rang.
It was the school.
His heart jumped even though Sophie was not there.
“Mr. Mercer?” the administrator said.
“Yes.”
“A woman came to the front office asking to add herself back to Sophie's pickup list.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Tabitha?”
“No.”
The administrator paused.
“She said her name is Rebecca Cole.”
Daniel looked at the initials written on the court folder.
R.C.
Not Richard Cole.
Rebecca Cole.
May you like
Claire's cousin.
And Rebecca had been Sophie's godmother before disappearing from their lives three years ago.
