Chapter 2 - The Uphill Battle

The mahogany-paneled conference room at the law firm of Miller & Hayes smelled of stale coffee and impending doom. David sat across from his attorney, a seasoned family law practitioner named Robert, who was currently rubbing his temples in frustration.

"David, I'm going to shoot straight with you," Robert said, leaning forward. "Sarah's counsel is playing hardball. They’ve submitted character witness statements from her friends, heavily implying you have anger issues. They're leveraging the long hours you worked last quarter against you."

"I was working those hours to pay for the house she insisted we keep," David countered, his voice tight. "She knows I've never raised my voice at her or Lily. It's a lie, Robert. All of it."

"I know it, and you know it. But family court isn't always about the truth; it's about what you can prove, and who tells the more compelling story," Robert sighed. "Sarah is extremely composed on the stand. She plays the distressed, overwhelmed mother to perfection. And with you moving into the apartment downtown, they’re arguing you lack the stability to provide a primary residence for a four-year-old."

David felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach. He had spent the last six months living in a sterile, one-bedroom apartment just so Lily wouldn't have to witness the nightly screaming matches Sarah tried to instigate. He had done everything right. He documented his time, never missed a weekend, and kept a meticulously clean home. Yet, the legal system seemed blind to his efforts.

The worst part was the phone. Over the last few weeks of their cohabitation, David had caught Sarah recording him secretly, trying to bait him into an argument. When he wouldn't engage, she would twist his silence into "emotional neglect." He knew she had a secondary phone, a device she guarded with her life, which she used to coordinate her fabricated evidence and text the people helping her build her case. But he had no proof.

"So, what are our chances?" David asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Robert looked down at the legal pad in front of him. "If the judge buys her narrative, we're looking at every other weekend and alternating holidays. Full custody for her."

David closed his eyes. The thought of waking up in a silent apartment, only seeing Lily a few days a month, was suffocating. He couldn't let Sarah’s lies dictate his daughter's future.

"We fight," David said, opening his eyes, a renewed determination settling over him. "Whatever it takes in that courtroom tomorrow, we fight."
