WHATâS INSIDE

Grant barely had time to react before Ruth burst into his study.
âYou need to come upstairs. Now.â
He had never heard that tone from her.
Not in thirteen years.
Something cold gripped his spine.
When he entered Calebâs room again, the air felt heavier.
Ruth stood beside the bed, arms crossed tightly.
Marissa was already there.
Of course she was.
âWhat is this about?â Marissa asked calmly.
Ruth didnât answer her.
She looked at Grant.
âFeel it.â
Grant hesitatedâthen placed his hand along the cast.
At first, nothing.
Thenâ
A shift.
Subtle.
But real.
His blood ran cold.
âThatâs not swelling,â Ruth said.
Marissa let out a small, dismissive laugh.
âThis is ridiculous.â
But Grant wasnât listening anymore.
âGet the car,â he said.
Marissa stepped forward. âGrant, donât overreactââ
âI said get the car.â
Something in his voice made her stop.
At the hospital, everything moved fast.
X-rays.
Scanning.
Confused nurses.
Thenâ
Silence.
The doctor stared at the screen longer than he should have.
Grant felt his pulse in his throat.
âWhat is it?â he demanded.
The doctor turned slowly.
âThereâs a foreign object inside the cast.â
The room went still.
Caleb squeezed his eyes shut.
âI told youâŠâ
Grantâs world shattered in a single breath.
They cut the cast open.
Carefully.
Slowly.
And what fell out onto the tray made Ruth gasp.
A small, sealed plastic capsule.
Inside itâ
A cluster of live biting ants.
Still moving.
Still aggressive.
Still searching for skin.
Grant staggered back.
âNoâŠâ
The doctor looked horrified. âThis was intentional.â
Grant turned.
Very slowly.
Marissa stood near the wall.
Perfect posture.
Perfect silence.
May you like
But her eyesâ
Her eyes gave her away.
