CHAPTER 2: Fighting for Her Life

The emergency room was a blur of motion.

“High fever—104!”

“Pulse is weak!”

“Possible severe infection!”

Michael stepped in, instantly in control.

“Start IV fluids. Get blood work. Prepare antibiotics—broad spectrum, now!”

Lily lay on the bed, so small… too small.

Her face flushed with fever, her breathing uneven.

Michael approached slowly.

For a moment, the noise around him faded.

He studied her features.

The curve of her cheek.

The shape of her eyes.

Emma.

She looked so much like Emma.

And something inside him broke—and healed—at the same time.

“Stay with me, Lily,” he whispered under his breath.

The team worked quickly, but her condition worsened.

“Blood pressure dropping!”

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“Come on… come on…”

Minutes felt like hours.

Then—

“Doctor… the labs.”

Michael scanned the results.

Severe bacterial infection. Advanced.

Dangerous—but treatable.

If they acted fast enough.

“We’re not losing her,” he said firmly. “Increase the dosage. Monitor every minute.”

Outside, his father sat alone, hands clasped tightly, lips moving in silent prayer.

For the first time in years, he wasn’t praying for himself.

He was praying for both his son…

…and his granddaughter.

Hours passed.

Finally, the doors opened.

Michael stepped out, exhaustion written across his face.

His father stood immediately.

“How is she?”

Michael paused.

Then, for the first time, a small smile broke through.

“She’s stable.”

The old man’s legs nearly gave out.

“Thank God…”

Michael looked at him—really looked this time.

All the anger he had carried for years…

…suddenly felt smaller.

“I’m sorry,” Michael said quietly.

His father shook his head.

“No… I should be the one saying that.”

They stood there, not as strangers anymore…

May you like

…but not quite whole yet.

Still, something had begun to mend.
