Chapter 9 - The Settlement and Surrender

Two weeks later, the Sterling empire completely collapsed.
Without Marcus to manage the architectural firm, and with all their joint assets frozen, the company hemorrhaged clients. The final blow came when the district attorney formally charged Marcus with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of attempted manslaughter.
Realizing that a highly publicized criminal trial would result in decades behind bars and total societal ruin, Beatrice and the defense team begged for a meeting.
They gathered in the sterile, glass-walled conference room of David Thorne’s downtown office. On one side of the mahogany table sat Beatrice, looking hollowed out, and Richard Croft. On the other side sat Eleanor, David, and Lily.
"We are prepared to offer a comprehensive settlement," Croft began, sliding a thick folder across the table. "Marcus will plead guilty to one count of felony assault. We are offering a lump sum of five million dollars in civil damages, and Marcus will sign over full ownership of the marital estate to Lily. In exchange, we ask that you drop the civil suit so we can keep the rest of this out of the press, and we ask the prosecution to recommend a reduced sentence of three years."
David didn't even open the folder. He looked at Eleanor, then at Lily.
Lily stared at the folder. Five million dollars. A house. It was more money than most people saw in a lifetime. It was an offer meant to buy her silence, to mitigate their shame.
She looked up at Beatrice. The older woman was staring at her, her eyes pleading, silently begging Lily to be the obedient, fragile girl she had always bullied.
"No," Lily said. Her voice wasn't a whisper anymore. It was clear, steady, and resolute.
Beatrice gasped. "Lily, please. You’ve ruined him. You’ve taken his money, his reputation. What more do you want?"
"I didn't ruin him, Beatrice," Lily replied coldly. "He ruined himself the moment he put his hands on me. And you helped him."
Lily turned to David. "Reject the financial settlement. I don't want their money. I want everything they tried to hide."
David smiled, a terrifying, predatory grin. He pushed the folder back across the table. "You heard her, Richard. Here are our terms. We drop nothing. Marcus pleads guilty to attempted manslaughter. He accepts a mandatory minimum of eight years in state prison, with no possibility of early parole. As for the civil suit, we are proceeding to trial. We are going to bankrupt him, and when we win, Lily will donate every single cent of his estate to domestic violence shelters in his name."
Beatrice covered her face with her hands, sobbing uncontrollably into the quiet room.
"You can't do this," Croft said, his voice trembling. "It's complete annihilation."
Eleanor leaned forward, resting her forearms on the table. She looked at Beatrice, remembering the arrogant woman in the hospital room filing her nails while Lily lay broken in a bed.

"I told you to pray to whatever God you believe in," Eleanor said softly, the words landing like hammer strikes. "This is the answer to your prayers. Sign the plea deal, or we will see you in court, and we will take everything else."
They signed.
