Nia picked Noah and Lily up early and took them to her sister's house.
The school had not released any records, and Caleb Reed had never reached the children, but his appearance shattered what little sense of privacy remained.
Maya contacted police about the attempted access and provided the earlier financial records connecting Caleb to North Harbor Advisory.
Luca wanted to go directly to Caleb.
Nia stopped him with one sentence.
Do not turn this into something the children have to watch.
Luca listened.
For once, listening felt more useful than acting first.
Caleb contacted Maya that evening through an attorney.
He claimed he had gone to the school only because Evelyn asked him to verify the twins' enrollment before she established an education trust.
No one believed the explanation.
Maya arranged a recorded civil interview the next morning.
Caleb arrived wearing a gray suit and the expression of a man who had spent the night deciding which truth would cost him least.
Nia recognized him immediately.
He looked older, heavier, and far less confident than the man who had once driven her to prenatal appointments.
Why did you help them?
Nia asked before Maya could begin.
Caleb looked down.
I needed money.
That is not an explanation.

He rubbed his hands together.

Caleb admitted Evelyn's office had paid him to obtain something that could establish whether Luca was Noah's father.
He claimed he believed the test was legitimate.
When Daniel later told him a different sample had been used, Caleb realized the plan had changed.
Why didn't you tell me?
Nia asked.
Because they had already paid me, and Daniel said we could both lose everything if it came out.
You let me raise two children believing their father rejected them.
Caleb's face tightened.

Nia stood and left the room before anger could make her say something she did not want recorded.
Luca followed her into the hallway but kept several feet between them.
You don't have to go back in.
Nia stared through the glass wall at Caleb.

Why?
Because for six years everyone else got to decide what version of my life was true.
I'm done leaving rooms while they explain me.
She returned to the interview.
Caleb eventually admitted one more fact.
Evelyn had contacted him the night of the restaurant reunion.
She asked whether he still possessed copies of Nia's old medical records and whether any document connected Luca to the twins before birth.
Caleb said no.
Then Evelyn offered him money to leave the country for six months.
Luca stared at him.
Do you have proof?
Caleb removed his phone.
He had saved the voicemail.
Maya played it once.
Evelyn's voice was unmistakable.
Caleb, discretion is more valuable now than it was six years ago.

Luca closed his eyes.
The sentence was not a full confession, but it was enough to show she was still trying to manage witnesses.
By afternoon, the independent committee at Moretti Holdings suspended Evelyn from all company access pending investigation.
She sent Luca one message.

Luca read it beside Nia and deleted it.
Nia watched him.
