Chapter 13 - The Poisoned Truth.

The abandoned laboratory smelled of dust, disinfectant, and old metal.
Ryan wheeled Mara beneath bright fluorescent panels that made the room feel colder than the hospital.
The fake guard fastened leather restraints around her wrists.
Helen stood beside a biometric console in her white blouse, untouched by the rain.
The cassette recorder rested on the steel table.
Its battery compartment was open.
“Your father designed a clever alarm,” Helen said.
“But alarms can be turned off.”
The console required Mara’s fingerprint and spoken authorization to cancel the trust review.
If she refused, Helen planned to use a recording and Mara’s severed thumb.
She described the threat in the same voice she once used to offer tea.
Ryan looked away.
“You told me nobody else had to get hurt.”
Helen regarded him with contempt.
“You used a hammer in a room full of windows.”
“Because she was sending the files.”
“Because you are weak.”
Mara watched the distance open between them.
“She chose you because you were disposable,” Mara said.
Ryan struck the steel table with the hammer.
“Be quiet.”
“The trust freezes her shares, but the criminal charges belong to you.”
Helen slapped Mara across the face.
The movement pulled her sleeve upward.
A second syringe was taped against her forearm.
Ryan saw it.
“What is that?”
Helen lowered her sleeve.
“A precaution.”
Mara’s cracked smartphone lay beside the recorder, connected to a cable while Ryan searched its cloud files.
Its screen lit with a message from Lena.
BACKUP RESTORED.
The emergency recording had repaired itself from fragments stored across Mara’s watch and home network.
Mara turned her face toward the phone.
Facial recognition unlocked it.
The screen began streaming to Lena’s secure account.
Helen did not notice.
She pressed the syringe against Mara’s neck.
“Authorize the cancellation.”
Mara looked directly at the phone camera.
“Tell me why you poisoned my father.”
Pride defeated caution.
Helen confessed that Thomas had threatened everything she built.
She confessed to Richard’s death, Nora’s death, and the doses hidden in Mara’s tea.
She even confessed to ordering Vale’s water poisoned at the courthouse.
“You think morality protects people,” Helen said.
“Money protects people.”
Mara heard a faint voice from the phone speaker.
Lena had connected the stream to Grant, Evelyn, and the Cole Biomedical board.
Ryan lunged for the device.
Helen drove the syringe into his neck.
He staggered backward, stunned.
“Mother?”
“You were always the weakest witness.”
Ryan collapsed beside the hammer.
Helen turned toward Mara with the empty syringe.
Behind her, the wall monitor displayed a new message.
LIVE BROADCAST: 1,842 VIEWERS.
Messages flooded the monitor faster than Helen could read them.
Board members demanded police intervention.
Reporters copied the stream before anyone could remove it.
Former Cole employees began naming other suspicious deaths in the comments.
The fake guard tried to shut down the server rack, but a steel security panel sealed over it.
Thomas had transformed the laboratory from a hidden crime scene into a witness that could no longer be threatened.
Helen stepped over Ryan and grabbed the hammer.
“Then I will destroy every machine in this room.”
Mara pulled against the restraints as Helen raised the weapon toward the console controlling both the stream and the locked doors.
