Chapter 2 - The Wedding That Stopped.

Rebecca recovered quickly, and that frightened me more than panic would have.

She closed the double doors behind her and lowered her voice.

"Havenridge is a school, Ethan."

"It says residence."

"It offers residential programs."

"For a six-year-old who has never spent a night away from me?"

Rebecca looked at Lily with a carefully controlled expression.

"She has been struggling since we got engaged."

Lily's fingers tightened around mine.

"I didn't do anything."

Rebecca's eyes sharpened.

"No one said you did."

I moved Lily behind me.

"Don't talk to her like that."

A knock sounded at the door.

My sister Hannah opened it just enough to look inside.

She was wearing the pale green bridesmaid dress Rebecca had chosen, and her smile vanished when she saw Lily crying.

"What's wrong?"

"The ceremony is paused."

Rebecca turned toward me.

"You cannot humiliate me in front of two hundred people because a child misunderstood a conversation."

"A child didn't write this note."

Hannah took the paper from my hand.

Her face changed as she read it.

"What is Havenridge?"

Rebecca answered before I could.

"A private educational program I researched because Ethan refuses to admit Lily needs structure."

That sentence landed like a slap.

I had never discussed sending Lily away.

I had never agreed she needed a residential program.

I had never even heard the name Havenridge.

Hannah looked at me.

"Did you sign anything?"

"No."

Rebecca crossed her arms.

"We can discuss this after the wedding."

"There is no wedding until I know what this is."

Her face went pale.

For the first time, the polished bride disappeared and I saw raw anger beneath the makeup.

"You are going to destroy our day over a piece of paper Lily probably took from my bag?"

Lily made a small choking sound.

"She gave it to me."

Rebecca froze.

"Who?"

"Marisol."

The nanny's name changed everything.

Marisol had cared for Lily three afternoons a week for almost a year.

She was patient, quiet, and so protective of Lily that I had once joked she interviewed babysitters more aggressively than I did.

Hannah immediately opened the door.

"I'll find her."

Rebecca stepped in front of her.

"No."

The word came too fast.

Everyone in the room heard it.

Rebecca tried to soften her tone.

"Marisol is downstairs with the flower girls, and we are already late."

Hannah stared at her.

"Then it should take thirty seconds."

She slipped past Rebecca and disappeared into the hallway.

Rebecca turned back to me.

"Ethan, you are letting fear control you."

"My daughter is afraid you are sending her away."

"Children become afraid when adults encourage dramatic behavior."

Lily started crying harder.

I felt something inside me shift permanently.

Before Rebecca entered my life, Lily had lost her mother to a sudden heart condition when she was three.

I had promised at Claire's funeral that our daughter would never again wonder whether a parent was coming back.

Rebecca knew that promise.

She had once told me it was one of the reasons she loved me.

The door opened again.

Hannah returned with Marisol, who looked terrified.

The nanny was carrying a large black tote bag clutched against her chest.

Rebecca's face drained of color.

Marisol looked directly at me.

"Mr. Hale, I was told not to speak to you until after the ceremony."

May you like

She set the tote on a chair.

"But if you are stopping the wedding, you need to see what Rebecca packed for Lily."
