Chapter 7: High Society Gala and Public Humiliation

The transfer order stated that Beacon Crest could no longer provide appropriate neonatal care.

It authorized the twins’ immediate relocation to a private hospital two hours away.

My electronic signature appeared at the bottom.

I had never seen the document.

An ambulance team arrived at 1:18 in the morning.

They carried specialized transport incubators and a sealed envelope bearing the hospital logo.

Dr. Morales refused to release the babies.

“The mother did not authorize this transfer.”

The lead paramedic showed her the order.

“The system says she did.”

Margaret compared the electronic signature with my hospital admission forms.

“It was copied.”

Grandfather called the network’s security director.

“Lock the neonatal floor.”

The ambulance crew remained cooperative.

They had no idea the order was fraudulent.

The transport company had received payment from an account connected to Keller Medical.

Security footage showed Calvin using an administrator’s terminal to create the request.

A second authorization had been added under Grant’s name as the legal father.

Grant had attempted to take the children he had called burdens less than twelve hours earlier.

Margaret contacted the police.

Grant’s attorney claimed he had requested the transfer because he feared my grandfather would use the twins as leverage.

I called Grant.

He answered on the fourth ring.

“Where are you?”

“You shouldn’t have stopped the ambulance.”

“Why are you trying to move them?”

“Beacon Crest is compromised.”

“You compromised it.”

His breathing changed.

“You don’t know what your grandfather is capable of.”

“I know what you are capable of.”

“Elise needs a specialist.”

“She has one.”

“The other hospital would be safer.”

“Calvin arranged the transfer.”

Grant became silent.

I continued.

“He forged my signature.”

“I didn’t know he would do that.”

“But you paid the transport company.”

Grant did not answer.

I heard a door close behind him.

Then Vanessa’s voice sounded in the distance.

“Grant, the police are downstairs.”

The call ended.

Twenty minutes later, investigators entered the apartment Grant had taken from me.

Grant was gone.

Vanessa was sitting alone at the kitchen table.

The Cayman Islands account had been emptied.

Grant had taken the money.

He had also taken Vanessa’s passport.
