Chapter 5: The Morning After

Three months later, the house was gone.

So was the life I thought I had.

But in its place—

Something stronger grew.

Lily and I moved to a small apartment across town. It wasn’t big. It wasn’t perfect.

But it was safe.

Every night, I tucked her into bed and kissed her forehead.

And every night, I told her the same thing:

“You saved us.”

She always shook her head.

“No, Mommy,” she’d say softly. “We saved each other.”

Derek went to trial.

And this time—

He didn’t smile.

Because the truth doesn’t stay buried.

Not when someone is brave enough to speak it.

Not when a little girl refuses to stay silent.

And not when a mother chooses to listen.

On a quiet Sunday morning, months later, Lily and I sat by the window, sunlight warming our faces.

No fear.

No whispers behind doors.

Just peace.

And for the first time in a long time—

I believed we were going to be okay.
