Chapter 10 - The Rehearsal.

The recording was not played in open court that morning.
Rachel first asked the judge for time to review it and verify where it came from.
The judge granted a temporary delay and denied Derek's request for emergency control over Lena's finances.
It was not a final victory.
It was enough to let Lena breathe.
Back at Rachel's office, Harris placed the digital recorder on the conference table.
"Eric says Derek asked him to keep this as insurance."
"Insurance against what?" Lena asked.
"Against Derek himself, apparently."
Harris pressed play.
Derek's voice came first.
"Start again."
Then a woman's voice answered.
Lena felt every muscle in her back tighten.
The voice sounded like hers.
Not exactly.
But close.
"I moved the money because Vincent told me to."
Derek interrupted.
"Slower."
The woman repeated the line.
The recording continued with statements describing Vincent as threatening and Lena as confused.
Each sentence matched a claim in Derek's court petition.
Carol, sitting beside Lena, went pale.
"Who is she?"
Harris looked at his notes.
"Eric says he doesn't know."
Vincent leaned forward.
"He knows something."
"Maybe."
Harris's tone sharpened.
"And I will handle Eric."
Vincent leaned back again.
Lena almost smiled despite herself.
Two days earlier, Vincent would have ignored the boundary.
Now he respected it because she needed him to.
Rachel listened to the entire recording twice.
"This helps establish planning," she said.
"But we still need to connect it clearly to the filings."
Naomi arrived with another discovery.
She had traced the certificates purchased with Lena's savings.
One had been closed three weeks earlier.
The proceeds were wired to an account belonging to Cole Residential Consulting.
Derek was the sole owner.
The other certificate remained open.
Its beneficiary designation, however, had recently been changed.
Lena looked at Naomi.
"Changed to who?"
Naomi turned the page.
"Not who."
"What?"
"A trust."
The name was Hart Family Protection Trust.
Lena stared at it.
"I've never created a trust."
"I know."
Rachel looked up sharply.
"Who is the trustee?"
Naomi hesitated.
"Vincent."
The room froze.
Lena turned toward her brother.
Vincent's face did not change, but his eyes did.
"I have never seen that trust."
Rachel's voice became careful.
"Your name is listed as trustee on a financial instrument tied to disputed funds."
"Then it's false."
Lena watched him.
Derek's entire strategy suddenly became visible in a new way.
He had not only prepared to portray Lena as unstable.
He had prepared to make Vincent look like he benefited from her money.
"He wanted the court to find this," Lena said.
Rachel nodded slowly.
"Eventually, yes."
Harris checked the document.
"We need the trust instrument."
Naomi opened her laptop.
"I requested it from the bank."
A new email appeared before she finished speaking.
She clicked it.
The attached PDF was twelve pages long.
The first page listed Lena as grantor and Vincent as trustee.
The final page contained notarized signatures for both of them.
Lena's was fake.
Vincent's looked real.
He leaned closer to the screen.
For the first time since the apartment rescue, genuine surprise crossed his face.
"That is my signature."
Lena looked at him.
"How?"
Vincent was silent for several seconds.
May you like
Then he said something that changed the entire direction of the case.
"Because Derek had access to a contract I signed two years ago."
