Chapter 4: The Search

The city became a maze of questions.

The father used every resource he had—private investigators, surveillance, connections in places no one spoke about.

But the boy had no record.

No school. No address. No name.

It was as if he didn’t exist.

Meanwhile, Emily changed.

She walked more each day. Stronger. Braver. But quieter, too.

“He’s still out there,” she would say. “I can feel it.”

Weeks passed.

Then one night—

A lead.

A street vendor claimed to have seen a barefoot boy helping people in the poorer district. Healing small wounds. Comforting strangers.

The father went immediately.

What he found… wasn’t what he expected.

The boy sat on the curb, wrapping a bandage around an elderly man’s arm.

No spotlight. No miracle.

Just kindness.

The father approached slowly.

“You could have had everything,” he said.

The boy didn’t look up. “I already do.”

“Why help strangers?”

Now the boy looked at him.

“Because no one else does.”

The father felt something inside him shift.

For the first time in years—

Shame.
