Chapter 6 - THE RESPONSE

The message went out at 02:14 A.M.
No signature.
No encryption trail.
Just a single line—
I’m still alive.
It traveled through channels that didn’t officially exist.
Private relays.
Dead networks.
Old infrastructure designed to be forgotten.
But not by him.
Inside a high-rise office thousands of miles away, a man stood alone.
Daniel Voss.
Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked a sleeping city.
Everything below him was quiet.
Orderly.
Predictable.
He preferred it that way.
A soft chime broke the silence.
He turned.
Slowly.
A secure terminal blinked once.
Then displayed the message.
Three words.
Nothing more.
He stared at it.
No reaction at first.
Then—
a faint smile.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“She finally speaks,” he murmured.
His reflection stared back at him in the glass.
Calm.
Unshaken.
But behind his eyes—
calculations were already moving.
He tapped the screen once.
A file opened instantly.
Images.
Surveillance stills.
Data fragments.
The Wife.
Different locations.
Different times.
Always watched.
Always measured.
“You survived longer than expected,” he said quietly.
Not impressed.
Just adjusting.
He walked to his desk.
Picked up a thin folder.
Paper.
Not digital.
Because some things were too valuable to exist online.
He opened it.
Inside—
photographs.
Older.
Grainier.
The Wife.
Years ago.
Before everything.
Before the mission.
Before the marriage.
And beside her—
her father.
Daniel’s eyes lingered on that image.
“Still protecting her,” he said softly.
A knock at the door interrupted the silence.
“Enter.”
A man stepped in.
Mid-40s.
Sharp suit.
Controlled posture.
“Sir,” he said.
“We intercepted unusual activity in the desert site.”
Daniel didn’t look up.
“I’m aware.”
The man hesitated.
“Should we respond?”
Daniel closed the folder.
Slowly.
Precisely.
“Yes,” he said.
“But not how they expect.”
He walked back to the window.
Hands behind his back.
“They think they’re hunting me,” he continued.
A faint smile returned.
“They’re not.”
He turned slightly.
Eyes cold now.
“They’re walking into the open.”
The man nodded.
“What are your orders?”
Daniel paused.
Just long enough to make it deliberate.
“Release the secondary network.”
The man’s expression tightened.
“That will expose—”
“Only what I want exposed,” Daniel cut in.
Controlled.
Firm.
“No more.”
A beat.
“And the girl?” the man asked.
Daniel’s gaze shifted back to the screen.
To her image.
Still frozen there.
“She wants me to see her,” he said.
A quiet acknowledgment.
“She wants a reaction.”
He stepped closer to the terminal.
His reflection merging with hers.
“Give her one.”
Back in the desert mansion—
the monitors flickered.
An alert sounded.
Sharp.
Immediate.
The technician leaned forward.
“Something’s coming in.”
The Wife didn’t move.
“Show me.”
The screen changed.
Data flooded in.
Faster than before.
More aggressive.
More open.
Her father stepped closer.
“What is that?”
The technician’s voice dropped.
“It’s a leak.”
A pause.
“Massive.”
Financial routes.
Shell accounts.
Contacts.
All unraveling at once.
Too fast.
Too clean.
The Wife’s eyes narrowed.
“No,” she said.
“That’s not a leak.”
Her father looked at her.
“Then what is it?”
She watched the pattern.
The timing.
The precision.
“It’s a message.”
The room went still.
Because now—
they understood.
The technician swallowed.
“He’s exposing himself?”
The Wife shook her head.
“No.”
A quiet breath.
“He’s choosing what we see.”
The realization landed hard.
Her father’s voice lowered.
“A controlled burn.”
“Yes.”
Her gaze didn’t leave the screen.
“He’s cutting pieces of his network loose.”
“To protect the core.”
The technician leaned back slightly.
“That still gives us something.”
The Wife nodded once.
“It does.”
A beat.
“But it also tells him how we move.”
Silence followed.
Heavy.
Strategic.
Dangerous.
An incoming video file appeared.
Encrypted.
Marked for direct playback.
The technician hesitated.
“Do we open it?”
The Wife answered immediately.
“Yes.”
The screen went black.
Then—
it flickered to life.
Daniel Voss appeared.
Clear.
Centered.
Perfectly composed.
As if he had always been there.
Waiting.
“Hello,” he said calmly.
His voice filled the room.
Smooth.
Controlled.
Unnervingly steady.
“I was wondering when you’d reach out.”
The Wife didn’t react.
Not outwardly.
But her fingers tightened slightly.
Daniel tilted his head.
Just a fraction.
“You’ve done well,” he continued.
“Survived. Adapted. Impressive.”
A pause.
Then—
his tone shifted.
Slightly colder.
“But you’re still thinking too small.”
The father stepped forward.
Anger flickering beneath control.
“Turn it off,” he said.
The Wife raised a hand.
Stopping him.
“Wait.”
Her eyes stayed locked on the screen.
Daniel smiled faintly.
“There you are,” he said.
“I was hoping you’d be watching.”
A beat.
“You sent me a message.”
His eyes sharpened.
“So here’s mine.”
The image zoomed out slightly.
Revealing more of the room behind him.
Dark.
Minimal.
Unfamiliar.
“You think this ends with him,” Daniel said.
Referring to the Husband.
“It doesn’t.”
A pause.
“It begins with him.”
The screen flickered.
Then changed.
A new image appeared.
A location.
Coordinates.
Time-stamped.
The technician leaned in.
“What is that?”
The Wife didn’t answer.
Because she already knew.
A meeting point.
A trap.
Or something worse.
Daniel’s voice returned.
Final.
“If you want the truth,” he said,
“come find me.”
A beat.
“Alone.”
The screen went black.
Silence filled the room again.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Then—
the father turned to her.
“We’re not doing that.”
Immediate.
Firm.
The Wife stared at the blank screen.
Thinking.
Calculating.
He waited.
Knowing what she would say—
before she said it.
“Yes,” she replied quietly.
“We are.”
The tension snapped back into place.
Stronger than before.
This wasn’t just a hunt anymore.
It was a game.
And Daniel Voss had just made his move.
May you like
The question now—
was who would make the next one.
