Chapter 13 - The Hearing.
The first court hearing concerning Daniel's attempt to gain temporary financial control over Claire took place two days after the Mercer House archive was unlocked.
Rachel warned Claire that the proceeding would be less dramatic than television and more exhausting than she expected.
She was right.
There were long arguments about jurisdiction, document authenticity, privacy, and what evidence could properly be considered at an early stage.
Daniel sat across the courtroom beside his attorneys.
He did not look at Claire when she entered.
Claire was grateful.
Arthur sat several rows behind her with Miriam.
Elena and Noah waited outside until needed.
Daniel's counsel argued that the petition had been prepared out of concern because Claire had become suspicious of ordinary financial arrangements and had reacted unpredictably during pregnancy.
Rachel responded that refusing to sign a materially revised forty-two-million-dollar collateral document was not evidence of incapacity.
She submitted the two versions of the consent form, the precompleted notary block, and records showing Daniel had prepared the petition before the confrontation at Mercer House.
The judge asked a simple question.
"Did Mrs. Mercer have independent counsel when the revised document was presented?"
Daniel's attorney said no.
"Was she given an opportunity to obtain independent counsel before the stated deadline?"
The answer was again no.
The judge wrote something down.
Daniel's team then offered the email from Claire's account approving Rosebridge.
Rachel presented hospital records showing Claire was receiving treatment when the email was sent and device logs showing it originated from the phone Daniel had reported lost.
Daniel's lawyer suggested Claire could have sent it remotely or instructed Daniel to do so.
Rachel did not argue emotionally.
She asked whether there was any evidence of that instruction.
There was not.
Then Noah testified.
He described preparing the revised spousal consent at Daniel's direction.
He admitted completing the notary block in advance.
He admitted creating backdated North Quay documents.
He admitted staying silent far too long.
Daniel's attorney attacked his credibility by emphasizing that Noah now hoped cooperation would reduce his own exposure.
Noah agreed.
"I hope telling the truth matters," he said.
"That does not change what I did."
The answer was stronger than a denial would have been.
Elena testified next.
She described Daniel taking Claire's phone, changing access codes, dismissing staff, and keeping Claire isolated upstairs that morning.
Daniel's counsel asked whether Daniel had ever told Elena he intended to hurt Claire.
"No," Elena said.
"Did he ever tell you he would physically harm her?"
"No."
The attorney nodded as though he had won something.
Elena continued before he could sit down.
"He did not need to tell me what he intended."
The judge looked up.
Elena explained that she had watched Claire become more careful in her own home over months.
Claire stopped asking certain questions at dinner.
She waited until Daniel left before calling friends.
She apologized for decisions that did not require apologies.
Elena's testimony was not about one dramatic event.
It was about a pattern of shrinking choices.
Then Arthur took the stand.
Daniel finally looked at him.
Rachel had not called Arthur to prove Claire's state of mind.
She called him because Daniel's petition relied heavily on the claim that Arthur was confused and manipulating Claire.
Arthur testified about North Quay, the internal audit, and his reasons for going to Mercer House with police after receiving Claire's one-word message.
Daniel's attorney then asked about the forged loan application from seventeen years earlier.
Arthur answered every question.
Yes, Daniel had forged Evelyn's signature.
Yes, Arthur paid the loan.
Yes, he persuaded the bank not to escalate the matter.
Yes, he kept the incident private.
The attorney asked whether Arthur had spent years protecting Daniel from consequences.
Arthur said yes.
"And now you want this court to believe you suddenly see him clearly?"
Arthur looked at his son.
"No."
He turned back to the attorney.
"I want the court to understand that my failure to see him clearly sooner is part of why we are here."
Daniel's face changed.
For the first time, Claire saw anger break through his courtroom composure.
The attorney asked whether Arthur resented Daniel for challenging his leadership.
"I resent what he did to people who trusted him."
"Including you?"
"Especially Claire."
Daniel looked away.
The court did not make final findings about every disputed fact that day.
It did not need to.
The judge denied Daniel's request for temporary financial control over Claire and continued existing no-contact protections while related matters proceeded.
The decision was narrow, procedural, and devastating to Daniel's plan.
He had wanted legal paperwork that could make Claire's refusal look unreliable.
Instead, the court had preserved her independence.
Outside the courtroom, reporters called questions from behind a barrier.
Claire did not stop.
She entered a waiting car with Rachel.
Arthur left separately.
Daniel remained inside with counsel.
For ten minutes, Claire felt something close to relief.
Then Rachel's phone rang.
It was the forensic analyst working on the Mercer House archive.
Rachel listened without speaking.
"What?" Claire asked.
Rachel turned on speaker.
The analyst said someone had initiated a remote deletion command against the private server less than three minutes after the hearing ended.
The command was still running when the forensic mirror detected it.
Most evidence had already been copied, but the live server was being erased folder by folder.
"Can you see where the command came from?" Rachel asked.
The analyst hesitated.
"Yes."
Claire felt the old coldness return.
"Where?"
"Mercer House."
Rachel immediately called investigators.
Claire stared out the car window.
Daniel was still in the courthouse.
Kessler was under company restrictions.
Elena was with Arthur's security team.
Noah was with his lawyer.
