Chapter 1: The Call That Changed Everything

The moment the call ended, the ballroom no longer felt grand—it felt suffocating.
Emma tightened her grip around Lily, gently brushing mashed food from her daughter’s hair as the little girl trembled against her chest.
“It’s okay, baby… Mommy’s here,” she whispered, though her own voice was shaking.
Across the room, the grandmother sipped her champagne as if nothing had happened, her lips curling into a smug smile. The guests—those same well-dressed, polished elites—pretended not to notice. A few exchanged awkward glances, but no one stepped forward.
And Daniel… he just stood there.
“Emma, don’t make a scene,” he muttered under his breath, adjusting his cufflinks like this was all some minor inconvenience.
That was the moment something inside her broke.
“A scene?” Emma turned slowly, her eyes blazing. “Your mother humiliated your daughter, and you’re worried about a scene?”
Daniel’s jaw tightened. “You’re overreacting.”
Emma let out a hollow laugh. “No… I’ve been underreacting for years.”
The sound of heels echoed sharply across the marble floor as she turned toward the exit, holding Lily close.
