Chapter 12 - The Story Margaret Told the Police.

Daniel opened the door only after Peter told him to keep his hands visible and his voice calm.

One officer introduced himself as Sergeant Alvarez.

The other was Officer Reed.

Margaret stood several feet behind them wearing a coat over her birthday dress.

Her mascara had been deliberately smudged beneath one eye.

"We received a report of a domestic disturbance involving a child," Sergeant Alvarez said.

Daniel looked at his mother.

"You called the police?"

Margaret covered her mouth.

"I was afraid for Lily."

The rage that crossed Daniel's face was immediate.

I touched his arm.

"Don't."

He looked at me.

For once, he listened.

Sergeant Alvarez asked whether anyone had been injured.

I told him exactly what happened.

I admitted I slapped Daniel.

I did not soften it.

Then I explained what happened immediately before.

Margaret interrupted.

"She attacked my son while holding that baby."

Officer Reed raised a hand.

"Ma'am, we'll speak with everyone separately."

Margaret looked offended by the idea that she might not control the order of the story.

I showed Sergeant Alvarez the mark on Lily's hand.

Then I showed him the dining-room security footage.

He watched without expression.

When the bowl moved, his eyes narrowed.

When Margaret slapped Lily's hand, he paused the video.

"Is this continuous footage?"

"Yes."

"Can you provide the original file?"

"Yes."

Margaret stepped forward.

"That camera distorts the angle."

Sergeant Alvarez looked at her.

"The angle doesn't move the bowl by itself."

She fell silent.

Daniel then showed him the edited clip Margaret had sent the attorney.

He explained where the original came from.

Officer Reed asked Margaret whether she had modified the video.

"I clarified it."

"What does that mean?"

"I removed irrelevant material."

"Including the fact that the child was choking?"

Margaret's expression hardened.

"Claire has always been too rough with Lily."

"Do you have unedited footage supporting that?"

She did not answer.

The officers separated us.

I spoke with Officer Reed in the kitchen.

Daniel spoke with Sergeant Alvarez in the living room.

Peter stayed near Lily.

For nearly forty minutes, the house became a place of questions instead of shouting.

When the officers finally regrouped, Sergeant Alvarez addressed Daniel first.

"Based on what we've seen tonight, we are not removing the child from this home."

Margaret's face collapsed.

"You're leaving her with Claire?"

"The child lives here with both parents."

"She hit my son."

"And your son has declined to pursue a complaint at this time."

Daniel looked at me.

I had not asked him to do that.

Sergeant Alvarez continued.

"However, there are concerns about the child's hand and the conflicting video evidence."

He looked at Margaret.

"You should not return to this residence tonight."

"This is my son's house."

"And he has asked you to leave."

Margaret stared at Daniel.

"You told them that?"

Daniel's voice was quiet.

"Yes."

For the first time, her mask disappeared completely.

"You ungrateful little coward."

The officers both turned toward her.

Margaret caught herself too late.

She pointed at me.

"She did this."

Daniel shook his head.

"No, Mom."

He looked exhausted.

"You did."

Margaret was escorted to her car.

I thought the worst part of the night was finally over.

Then Sergeant Alvarez returned from the porch holding a small black device in a clear evidence bag.

"We found this attached beneath your dining table."

Daniel stared at it.

"What is it?"

May you like

The officer looked at both of us.

"A voice recorder."
