Chapter 6 - The Brother Who Died Twice.

Gabriel had buried Arthur Voss ten years earlier.
The coffin had been closed because the fire that killed him left almost nothing recognizable.
Gabriel had identified him through a watch, dental records, and Daniel Cross's sworn testimony.
Now he stared at a photograph taken only three months ago.
Arthur looked older.
He did not look dead.
Lena watched Gabriel's face carefully.
"I found that in Sterling's office."
Gabriel turned the photograph over.
A date and address had been written on the back.
The address belonged to an abandoned theater on the south side.
"Why would my brother fake his death?"
Lena shook her head.
"Maybe he didn't fake it alone."
Mateo entered the hospital room with news from the burned estate.
Daniel's body had been found near the greenhouse.
He had been shot once through the chest.
The blood in the abandoned vehicle was his.
Sterling had escaped again.
Gabriel looked at the photograph.
Daniel had protected Arthur's secret for a decade.
Someone had silenced him the moment that secret became vulnerable.
Rory woke and immediately reached for her mother.
Lena pulled her close.
"We're leaving this city."
Gabriel shook his head.
"Not yet."
Lena's eyes sharpened.
"My daughter nearly starved because of people connected to you."
The accusation landed cleanly.
Gabriel did not defend himself.
"You're right."
Lena looked surprised.
"But if Arthur is alive, running won't protect you."
He placed the photograph on the bedside table.
"We end this."
Rory looked from the picture to Gabriel.
"Is that your brother?"
"Yes."
"Do you love him?"
Gabriel did not answer immediately.
"I used to."
Rory considered that.
"Mommy says loving someone doesn't make what they do okay."
Lena closed her eyes, embarrassed.
Gabriel almost smiled.
"Your mother is right."
That afternoon, Mateo accessed sealed insurance records from Arthur's supposed death.
The dental identification had been submitted by a private forensic contractor.
The contractor no longer existed.
Its registered owner was one of the shell companies listed in Lena's evidence.
Gabriel's grief had been manufactured with paperwork he never questioned.
The abandoned theater address became their next lead.
They entered after dark through a rear loading door.
Dust covered the lobby.
The stage curtains had rotted into strips.
Yet fresh tire tracks marked the alley.
In the basement they found a furnished office hidden behind a false wall.
Maps covered one side.
Photographs covered another.
Gabriel saw himself leaving restaurants, entering court buildings, and standing beside his father's grave.
Arthur had watched him for years.
Then Rory stepped closer to the wall.
Her face went pale.
"That's me."
Dozens of photographs showed Rory outside school, beside the motel, and walking with Lena.
Some had been taken months before Sterling claimed to have found them.
Lena backed away.
"He's been watching us longer than I knew."
Mateo opened a filing cabinet.
Inside were profiles of employees, judges, police officers, journalists, and business rivals.
Each folder had a colored sticker.
Green meant useful.
Yellow meant vulnerable.
Red meant remove.
Lena's folder was red.
Gabriel's was black.
Rory's folder was purple.
Gabriel opened it.
The first page contained her name, birth date, school history, and medical records.
At the bottom was one typed instruction.
DO NOT HARM UNTIL PATERNITY CONFIRMED.
Gabriel stopped breathing.
Lena snatched the page from his hand.
Her face collapsed.
Gabriel looked at her.
"Paternity?"
Lena stepped backward.
May you like
Rory looked between them.
And Gabriel realized the conspiracy had just reached deeper into his life than money ever could.
