Chapter 8 - THE TRUST WITH MY NAME ON IT

The trust had been created eighteen months earlier.

According to the documents, I had contributed $1.6 million in business interests and future distributions to it.

I had done no such thing.

The trustee was Margaret Bennett.

The successor trustee was Vanessa.

Daniel was listed as a beneficiary.

So were Lily and Noah.

My name appeared everywhere.

My actual consent appeared nowhere.

Thomas explained how it worked.

"Margaret used the trust as a way to show lenders that the family had access to additional assets."

Rachel flipped through the pages.

"Access they didn't actually have."

"Correct."

"Who prepared this?"

"A private attorney named Frederick Sloan."

I recognized the name.

He had attended Christmas at Margaret's house twice.

He called her Peggy.

My stomach turned.

"Did Daniel know?"

Thomas looked at me.

"He attended the meeting."

The room disappeared around me.

"What meeting?"

"The planning meeting."

"When?"

"October eighteenth, eighteen months ago."

I knew that date.

It was Noah's birthday.

Daniel had left the party early because he said a client emergency had come up.

I stared at Thomas.

"He left our son's birthday to create a fake trust with my assets?"

Thomas didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Rachel asked for emails.

Thomas produced them.

One came from Daniel.

KEEP CLAIRE OUT OF THE DETAILS UNTIL EVERYTHING IS STABLE.

Another came from Margaret.

SHE SIGNS WHATEVER DANIEL PUTS IN FRONT OF HER.

I read that sentence twice.

Then once more.

I didn't cry.

That surprised me.

Something beyond grief had taken over.

I had spent years wondering why Margaret never respected me.

The answer was simple.

She believed trust was stupidity.

Kindness was weakness.

Marriage was access.

And her son had taught her she was right.

Thomas continued.

"The company wasn't always failing."

I looked up.

"What?"

"Three years ago, Bennett Holdings was profitable."

"Then what happened?"

"Margaret started extracting money."

He showed us transfers.

A vacation property.

Vanessa's boutique.

Private club dues.

Luxury vehicles.

Consulting fees.

Legal expenses unrelated to the business.

They had drained the company, then reached for my assets to hide the damage.

"How much did they take?" I asked.

Thomas hesitated.

"Directly?"

"Everything."

"More than four million dollars."

My breath caught.

"And Daniel?"

"He received distributions."

"How much?"

"Approximately six hundred thousand."

I stared at the number.

We didn't live like people receiving six hundred thousand dollars in secret.

"Where did it go?"

Thomas looked uneasy.

"That I don't know."

Rachel did.

"Can we trace it?"

Samuel could.

It took him less than a day.

Most of Daniel's hidden money had been moved into an account at a brokerage firm.

Then withdrawn in chunks.

Some went to Bennett Holdings.

Some went to Margaret.

But $190,000 had gone somewhere unexpected.

A woman named Natalie Cross.

I had never heard the name.

Samuel found her address.

Thirty-four years old.

Former marketing director at Bennett Holdings.

She had left the company two years earlier.

Rachel looked at me carefully.

"Claire, before you assume anything, we investigate."

I nodded.

But my heart already knew.

Daniel had secrets beyond money.

That evening, while the children were asleep, I searched Natalie online.

Her social media was mostly private.

One public photo remained.

She stood on a beach holding the hand of a little boy.

The caption read:

MY WHOLE WORLD TURNED FIVE TODAY.

The post was dated four months earlier.

Something about the child made me stare longer than I should have.

Then I saw it.

A familiar dimple in his left cheek.

The same dimple Daniel had.

The same dimple Noah had.

I zoomed in.

My hands started shaking.

The boy had Daniel's eyes.

May you like

And suddenly the $190,000 wasn't the question.

The child was.
