Chapter 1: The Man at the Door

The music didn’t stop when I stepped inside.

It should have.

The moment my boots crossed from the cold concrete into polished marble, something in the air shifted—but not enough for anyone else to notice. Laughter still echoed. Glasses still clinked. My mother’s voice still floated through the dining room like nothing in the world had ever gone wrong.

Behind me, I heard Jamie’s small footsteps hesitate.

“Dad?” he whispered.

That word hit harder than anything else.

I turned just enough to nod at him. “Stay with your mom.”

Then I walked forward.

Prudence tried to grab my arm. “Wait—listen, this isn’t—”

I didn’t even look at her. “Don’t.”

One word. Flat. Final.

She let go.

The dining room came into view—bright chandeliers, a table full of food, guests dressed in silk and confidence. And at the center of it all sat my mother, Gertrude, laughing as she raised a glass of wine.

She looked… comfortable.

Like a queen on a throne I had built.

“Mom,” I said.

The word cut clean through the room.

Silence fell like something heavy breaking.

Her smile froze.

The glass slipped from her fingers and shattered on the floor.

For a moment, she just stared at me—like she’d seen a ghost she hadn’t prepared an excuse for.

“Y-you’re… home?” she stammered.

I stepped closer, slow and deliberate.

“Yeah,” I said. “I came to see how my family’s been living.”

Her eyes flickered. Not guilt.

Calculation.

That told me everything.
