Chapter 9 - Monday Morning.

The transfer did not go through.

Thomas spent the next hour calling the trustee's emergency line, documenting Emily's objection, and demanding that every transaction involving the education trust be frozen pending review.

Gregory called it an overreaction.

Emily called it the first peaceful hour she had experienced all night.

By two in the morning, she left the house with her mother's letter, a copy of the trust, and photographs of the Calder emails.

She did not take the original folder.

Thomas advised against it.

Natalie stayed behind only long enough to pack a suitcase.

She booked a room at another hotel under her maiden name.

Gregory did not try to stop her this time.

His final words to Emily came from the front steps.

"Calder will choose its board over a twenty-three-year-old trainee."

Emily turned back once.

"Then I'll know exactly what kind of company hired me."

She spent Sunday in a small apartment across town that Gregory had never approved of.

It had one bedroom, a narrow kitchen, and a view of a brick wall.

Emily loved every inch of it because the lease was in her name.

She slept for three hours.

She woke to nineteen missed calls.

Seven were from Gregory.

Four were from Natalie.

Three were from Thomas.

The rest were numbers she did not recognize.

One voicemail came from Dr. Lena Park.

"Emily, I heard there may be confusion around your start date."

Lena's voice was calm.

"Come to Calder Monday morning at eight as originally scheduled."

Emily listened to the message twice.

Then she cried for the first time since the wedding.

Not because she was afraid.

Because somebody had told her to show up instead of telling her to disappear.

Monday morning arrived under a hard blue sky.

Emily wore a navy suit, low heels, and the silver watch that had belonged to her mother.

She reached Calder Biotech's glass headquarters at seven forty-two.

A security guard checked her identification.

Her badge printed without a problem.

She stared at it.

EMILY CARTER - RESEARCH STRATEGY ASSOCIATE.

The title felt unreal.

"First day?" the guard asked.

"Yes."

"Congratulations."

Two ordinary words nearly undid her.

She entered the lobby.

Dr. Lena Park was waiting beside the elevators.

Lena was in her forties, composed, direct, and famous among graduate students for asking difficult questions without humiliating the person answering them.

She hugged Emily once.

"You look exhausted."

"I had a wedding."

Lena raised an eyebrow.

"Your wedding?"

"Definitely not."

They entered the elevator.

"We need to talk before orientation," Lena said.

Emily's stomach tightened.

"About Malcolm Reese?"

Lena looked at her.

"So you know."

"My father called him."

"Your father called several people."

The elevator doors opened on the eleventh floor.

Lena led her into a conference room overlooking the river.

A woman from human resources and a man from legal were waiting inside.

Emily stopped at the door.

"Am I being fired before I start?"

The HR director smiled slightly.

"No."

Emily exhaled.

"Then why legal?"

The attorney motioned to a chair.

"Because someone attempted to place an executive hold on your onboarding without authority."

Emily sat down.

Lena remained beside her.

"Malcolm Reese submitted the request," Emily said.

"Yes," the attorney replied.

"He cited a potential conflict of interest related to family-held shares."

Emily felt heat rise into her face.

"I didn't know about those shares until Friday night."

"We believe you."

"How?"

The HR director slid a folder across the table.

"Because you disclosed every financial interest you knew about during hiring."

Emily opened the folder.

Her own signed ethics form was inside.

"And because Dr. Park documented your recruitment process from the beginning," the director added.

Lena smiled.

"You earned the position."

Emily looked down for a second.

"What happens now?"

The attorney folded his hands.

"Your employment continues."

"And Malcolm?"

"He has been asked to step away from matters involving you until an internal review is complete."

Emily blinked.

She had expected Calder to protect a senior insider.

Instead they had protected the process.

Her phone vibrated inside her bag.

She ignored it.

The attorney continued.

"There is one additional issue."

Emily almost smiled from exhaustion.

There was always one additional issue.

"Your trust's stake is part of a shareholder restructuring expected to be announced this month."

"My father told me."

"Then you should know that Carter Strategic Holdings submitted documents claiming authority to vote those shares."

Emily stared at him.

"He tried to transfer them."

"We are aware that the trustee froze the transfer."

The attorney slid another page toward her.

"But this proxy authorization is separate."

Emily looked at the signature line.

Her name was printed beneath it.

Above the printed name was a signature that looked almost exactly like hers.

Almost.

Emily's fingers went cold.

"I never signed this."

Lena leaned over the page.

The room went silent.

May you like

The attorney nodded once.

"That's why we asked legal to join us."
