PART 1: THE SHATTERED REFLECTION

Fifth Avenue carried its usual rhythm—espresso steam curling into the cold air, polished shoes tapping against spotless pavement, voices softened by money and distance.

Everything looked perfect.

Maximilian Vance stood beside his pearl-black Mercedes-Benz S-Class like he belonged to a different world entirely. At thirty-two, he had built an empire out of instinct and calculation. His charcoal suit fit like armor. His voice—sharp, controlled—cut through the morning air as he dismissed a multi-million-dollar deal without hesitation.

He didn’t see people.

He saw movement. Opportunity. Noise.

Then—

A heavy splash broke the illusion.

Dark, filthy water spread across the side of his car, dripping down the polished surface, distorting his reflection.

Everything went still.

Maximilian turned slowly, irritation already rising.

“What did you just do?”

His voice wasn’t loud—but it carried.

In front of him stood a boy. Small. Maybe five. His sneakers were too big, caked with dried mud. His hands gripped an empty plastic bucket so tightly his knuckles had gone pale.

The boy didn’t move.

Didn’t run.

Didn’t look away.

“You parked on my mom.”

The words were quiet.

But they landed harder than anything Maximilian had heard all morning.

For a moment, nothing made sense.

“…what?”

The boy lifted a shaking hand and pointed.

People nearby shifted, just enough to reveal what had been hidden.

Under the front tire—

Crushed lilies.

Carnations.

A torn handbag trapped beneath the weight of the car.

Maximilian’s chest tightened.

“I didn’t see—”

“She was right there,” the boy said, his voice beginning to crack. “You didn’t look.”

Something cold moved through Maximilian’s spine.

He crouched down, ignoring the dirt pressing into his tailored pants, and reached under the tire.

His fingers brushed against something metallic.

He pulled it free.

A silver bracelet.

Simple. Worn.

His breath caught.

A small engraved heart swung gently from the chain.

“To Anna. Love, Max.”

Everything inside him stopped.

“No…” he whispered.

The boy watched him carefully.

“You know my mom?”

Before Maximilian could answer—

The rear door of the Mercedes shifted slightly.

A soft sound.

Barely there.

“…Leo?”

Maximilian froze.

May you like

So did the boy.

The world held its breath.
