PART 2: The Boy Who Wouldn’t Be Saved

The silence didn’t last.

Ryan jerked backward the moment Clara touched him.

His breath came fast, uneven—like an animal trapped too long in a cage.

“Don’t—don’t touch me,” he whispered, voice cracking under years of cold nights and harder truths.

Leo froze. “Ryan… it’s us. It’s Mom.”

That word hit like a strike to the ribs.

Ryan laughed once—sharp, broken, disbelieving.

“Mom?” he repeated. “She stopped being that when she let me disappear.”

Clara didn’t move closer. She knew better now.

Her voice softened instead. “I never stopped looking for you.”

“You never looked hard enough,” Ryan snapped.

Wind pushed through the alley, scattering old receipts and plastic bags between them like ghosts of the past.

Ryan’s eyes flicked down to Clara’s hands—scarred, bandaged, trembling.

Something in him wavered.

But pain always speaks louder than truth.

“You’re rich people’s leftovers,” he said bitterly. “I learned how the world works out here. No one comes back for you unless they feel guilty.”

Leo stepped forward. “That’s not true—she—”

“Stop!” Ryan shouted.

The sound echoed off brick walls.

Then… he turned away.

Not because he was healed.

But because he was still surviving.

And survivors don’t trust miracles.
