CHAPTER 2 â THE TRUTH UNDER THE UNIFORM

The hospital wing of the military compound was silent except for the steady beep of monitors.
Lena sat wrapped in a blanket, doctors checking her condition. The baby was stable. That was the only reason Raymond Dickman hadnât already turned the entire base upside down.
The young officerâCaptain Marcus Haleâstood outside the room under guard. His face was pale, stripped of every trace of pride.
Inside, Raymond spoke softly.
âYouâre not supposed to be here,â Lena whispered.
âI know,â he said. âThatâs what makes this more complicated.â
He placed the insignia on the table beside her.
âYou were never just a captainâs wife,â he continued. âYour father didnât disappear. He was reassignedâoff the recordâafter a classified operation went wrong.â
Lenaâs breath caught.
âMy father died when I was twelve.â
Raymond shook his head.
âNo,â he said. âColonel Adrian Carter is alive. And he was the one who designed the Hawk Divisionâs command protocols. That insignia belonged to him before it ever belonged to me.â
Lenaâs hands trembled.
Outside the room, Marcus was listening now.
Every word shattered him further.
Raymond turned toward the window.
âAnd your husband,â he said coldly, âeither didnât know who you were⊠or chose to forget.â
Lena whispered, almost broken:
âHe said I was nothing. That I embarrassed him.â
The Generalâs jaw tightened.
âNo,â he said. âHe embarrassed himself.â
A long silence followed.

Then Raymond made a decision.
âBring Colonel Carter to me.â
