Chapter 4 - The House with the Missing Drawer.

.The next morning, Ava asked Daniel to postpone their meeting and drove to the townhouse she had shared with Owen.

She had not entered the place since the funeral.

Margaret had fought for possession of it immediately after his death, claiming family property had been stored inside.

A temporary court order had frozen the contents before either side could remove anything.

Daniel met Ava at the front steps with a court-appointed property officer.

Inside, the house looked untouched.

Owen's shoes remained beside the entry bench.

A half-read history book still rested near his chair.

For one dangerous second, Ava forgot the case and remembered the man who used to leave coffee cooling on every flat surface.

Then she saw the study door.

The lock had scratches around the keyhole.

The property officer photographed them before opening the room.

Ava walked directly to Owen's desk.

The bottom-right drawer was missing.

Not empty.

Missing.

Someone had removed the entire wooden compartment from its rails.

Daniel crouched beside the desk.

"Was that here after the funeral?"

"Yes."

"What was inside?"

Ava stared at the exposed cavity.

"I don't know."

That answer surprised Daniel.

Ava explained that Owen had respected the boundaries of her classified work, and she had respected his private financial records.

They had been married without sharing every password because trust did not require constant access.

Margaret had mocked them for that.

She called Ava secretive and Owen weak.

The property officer found a small brass screw beneath the desk.

It was newer than the surrounding hardware.

Someone had removed the drawer recently and tried to reinstall it before taking it away again.

Daniel checked the inventory photographs taken two days after Owen's death.

The drawer was visible then.

It was also visible three weeks later.

The next photograph had been taken after Margaret received supervised access to collect family photo albums.

The drawer was gone.

Daniel's voice became very quiet.

"We have our first clean chain of opportunity."

Ava opened the closet behind the desk.

Owen's coats were still there, but one garment bag had been cut open.

At the bottom of the closet lay an empty velvet medal pouch.

It carried Ava's initials.

She picked it up without speaking.

Daniel now understood how Margaret could have known the medals.

She had entered the house looking for them.

What she found instead may have been more valuable.

Behind a row of books, Ava discovered a narrow envelope taped to the wall.

It contained a memory card and a note in Owen's handwriting.

AVA - IF ANYONE QUESTIONS OCTOBER 14, DO NOT ANSWER UNTIL YOU SEE THIS.

Daniel swore under his breath.

Ava inserted the memory card into an offline laptop the property officer provided.

There was only one audio file.

Owen's voice filled the silent study.

"If you are hearing this, Margaret has probably done exactly what I was afraid she would do."

Ava's face went still.

Owen continued.

He said he had discovered financial transfers from one of the Bellamy family holding companies to Victor Saye's former logistics network.

He had confronted Margaret privately.

She denied knowing Saye.

Then she asked Owen a question no civilian should have known to ask.

She wanted to know whether Ava had kept the October 14 citation.

Daniel stopped the recording.

"Your husband knew she was searching for your classified medal record."

Ava stared at Owen's frozen waveform on the screen.

"Keep playing."

The recording resumed.

Owen's final sentence was barely above a whisper.

"Ava, if she forces this into court, do not give her the names."

Then another voice sounded in the background.

A woman's voice.

May you like

Margaret's voice.

"Owen, open the door."
