CHAPTER 2: WHAT IT MEANS TO COME HOME

The wedding was postponed.

No one argued.

No one dared.

Three days later, Amelia sat alone in a quiet café, staring at the two lockets lying on the table.

Twenty years of emptiness.

Twenty years of not knowing who she was.

And now, suddenly—everything had a name.

But it didn’t feel like belonging.

It felt like chaos.

“You didn’t come home,” Caroline’s voice said softly.

Amelia didn’t look up. “I didn’t know where home was.”

Caroline sat across from her, hesitant, careful—like approaching something easily broken.

“I don’t expect forgiveness,” Caroline said. “Not now. Maybe not ever.”

Amelia finally lifted her eyes.

“Then why are you here?”

Caroline swallowed hard. “Because I need you to know something.”

She slid a folder across the table.

Inside were years of search records. Missing child reports. Private investigators. Newspaper ads.

Every page screamed the same thing:

She never stopped looking.

Amelia’s fingers trembled as she turned the pages.

“You were loved,” Caroline whispered. “Even when you were lost.”

Tears slid silently down Amelia’s face.

For the first time in her life, her past didn’t feel empty.

It felt… wanted.

Daniel stepped into the café then, his eyes soft but steady.

“I’m not here to push you,” he said gently. “Just to stand with you.”

Amelia looked at both of them.

The man who chose her.

May you like

The woman who lost her.

And for the first time… she didn’t feel alone.
