Chapter 2: Ashes and Reckoning

The wedding was over before it ever began.

Guests quietly slipped out, whispering Clara’s name with a mixture of awe and fear. What had started as a spectacle of humiliation had turned into a public execution of power.

Patricia sat frozen in one of the front-row chairs, her carefully crafted image crumbling with every passing second.

“This is your fault,” she hissed at Andrew. “You let this happen.”

Andrew let out a hollow laugh. “No, Mother. You did.”

He looked toward Clara, who now stood surrounded by staff treating her with the respect she had always deserved.

“You never even tried to know her,” he continued. “You just assumed she was beneath us.”

Patricia’s voice trembled. “She tricked us.”

“No,” Andrew said quietly. “She gave us every chance.”

Across the hall, Clara was being wrapped in a silk shawl by one of the assistants.

The manager approached her again. “Madam, would you like us to escort them out?”

Clara paused.

Her eyes drifted to Patricia and Andrew.

For a moment, there was silence—one last chance for remorse.

Andrew stepped forward slowly.

“I was wrong,” he said, his voice low but sincere. “I should have stood by you.”

Clara studied him.

“You didn’t,” she replied simply.

That was the end of it.

No anger. No shouting.

Just truth.

She turned away.

“Please have them leave the premises,” she said calmly.

Security moved immediately.

Patricia protested, her voice shrill, but no one listened anymore.
