CHAPTER 5: WHAT REMAINS

Six months later, the Whitmore estate looked the same.
But it wasn’t.
The staff walked through the front halls now, not just the back.
Children’s laughter echoed where silence used to live.
And in the garden, beneath the long stretch of Atlantic sky, Lily ran barefoot across the grass.
“Uncle Caleb, look!”
He turned, smiling—a rare, unguarded thing.
“I’m looking.”
Nora stood nearby, watching.
Not invisible anymore.
Not small.
Just present.
Caleb walked over to her.
“She has Claire’s spirit,” he said.
Nora nodded.
“And your steadiness.”
He glanced at her.
“Stay,” he said quietly. “Not as staff. As family.”
Nora hesitated.
Then smiled.
“Okay.”
Across the lawn, Lily laughed again—bright, fearless, whole.
And for the first time in years, the past didn’t feel like a wound.
May you like
It felt like something that had finally led them home.
