Chapter 12 - The File Named Rachel.

Nobody touched the memory card except the crime-scene technician.

They opened it at police headquarters on an isolated computer disconnected from every network.

A folder appeared.

Its name was RACHEL.

Daniel sat beside Emma while Ortiz opened it.

The first file was a video recorded in Richard's office four months before his death.

Richard sat behind his desk looking exhausted.

Rachel sat across from him.

Daniel gripped Emma's hand.

The recording began in the middle of an argument.

"You cannot keep doing this," Richard said.

Rachel leaned forward.

"I'm fixing what she broke."

"By moving money through shell companies?"

Daniel felt the floor disappear beneath him.

Rachel did not deny it.

"The money is still ours."

"It belongs to investors, employees, and projects."

"Mom already took it."

"Then we report her."

Rachel laughed bitterly.

"And destroy the company?"

Richard's face hardened.

"We don't save a company by becoming criminals."

The video ended.

Daniel released Emma's hand and stood.

"She did it."

Maya remained seated.

"Keep watching."

The second file was another office recording from two weeks later.

This time Margaret sat in Rachel's chair.

Richard placed printed transfers in front of her.

"You took the first money," he said.

Margaret crossed her arms.

"I moved funds."

"You stole them."

"For the family."

"Don't use that word to excuse theft."

Margaret's expression hardened.

"Rachel covered it."

"Rachel created an even larger fraud trying to hide yours."

Daniel felt sick.

Both women had lied.

Both had moved money.

Both had given each other enough guilt to create mutual destruction.

The third file explained why.

Richard spoke directly to the camera alone.

"If Daniel sees this, understand that your mother started it and your sister expanded it."

He looked older than Daniel remembered from that year.

"Margaret believed she was protecting the family from a failed investment I had refused to rescue."

Richard paused.

"Rachel believed she was protecting the company from Margaret."

Another pause.

"They both convinced themselves that love made theft respectable."

Emma began crying quietly.

Richard continued.

"The Noah trust shown in the company books is not a true trust."

Daniel leaned closer.

"It is a tracing mechanism."

Maya whispered, "Bait."

Richard nodded on the screen as if he had heard her across time.

"I created it to identify who was moving money."

Daniel looked at Maya.

"So there is no eight million?"

"Not for Noah," Richard said on the recording.

The room went silent again.

"The account is a controlled pool linked to flagged transfers."

Richard's expression became painful.

"If Margaret or Rachel attempts to seize trusteeship, the transaction history will expose them."

Daniel sat down slowly.

Everything Margaret had done to take Noah had been based on a trust that was never his.

But Richard was not finished.

"Rachel does not know the trust is bait."

He looked away from the camera.

"Margaret does."

Daniel snapped his head up.

Emma whispered, "What?"

Richard continued.

"I told Margaret in the hope she would stop."

His jaw tightened.

"Instead, she realized the fake trust could be used to trap Rachel."

Maya stood.

"Oh my God."

Richard explained that Margaret had spent months collecting evidence of Rachel's cover-up.

But reporting Rachel would also expose Margaret's original theft.

So Margaret needed another way.

She planned to create a family crisis that would force control of the bait account into her hands.

Once that happened, she intended to alter the records and make Rachel appear solely responsible.

"So the custody case was never about Noah," Emma said.

Ortiz shook her head.

"He was leverage."

Daniel's vision narrowed.

His mother had terrified a child to clean her financial history.

The final video file was dated the night before Richard died.

Rachel entered his office at 11:14 p.m.

That matched the server log.

She was crying.

"Mom knows about the second ledger," Rachel said.

Richard looked frightened.

"How?"

"I told her."

Richard slammed his hand on the desk.

"Why?"

"Because she said she'd turn herself in if I helped her fix one last account."

Richard stared at his daughter.

"Rachel, listen to me."

He moved around the desk.

"Your mother is not fixing anything."

The video stopped.

The rest of the file was corrupted.

Daniel looked at Ortiz.

"Dad died the next morning."

Ortiz nodded.

"Natural heart attack, according to the autopsy."

"Do you still believe that?"

She did not answer immediately.

Then an officer entered.

"Detective, we found Rachel."

Daniel stood.

"Where?"

"St. Vincent Medical Center."

Emma frowned.

"That's where Margaret is."

May you like

The officer nodded.

"Rachel was arrested trying to enter her mother's room with a loaded syringe."
