Chapter 1: The Shattered Silence

The sanctuary of St. Jude’s was an expanse of sterile, blinding white. It was a space designed for peaceful mourning, filled today with the affluent residents of Oak Creek. They had gathered to mourn Arthur Pendelton, the town’s beloved philanthropist. From the back of the chapel, Clara watched the solemn procession. She was supposed to be invisible, the hired caterer wearing a simple burnt-orange shirt and a crisp white apron. But she carried a secret that made her heart hammer against her ribs.

The morning of the funeral, Clara had received a delayed, automated email from Arthur himself. It contained only two sentences: I am not in that box, Clara. Don't let them bury the lie.

Driven by a desperate, adrenaline-fueled clarity, Clara slipped into the church’s ongoing renovation wing. She bypassed the drywall and paint, her fingers wrapping around the cold, heavy handle of a steel sledgehammer.

When she stepped into the center aisle, dragging the hammer, murmurs rippled through the pews. Clara didn't stop. She marched straight up to the altar, raising the sledgehammer high above her head. With a guttural exhale, she brought it down hard. The impact cracked the pristine white lid of the casket like fragile porcelain.

"Stop! Stop it!" Eleanor, Arthur's widow, screamed from the front row. Dressed in mourning black and a sheer veil, she threw her hands up in frantic disbelief.

Julian, Arthur’s nephew, bolted from the pews, his black suit jacket flapping as he rushed the altar. "What are you doing?!" he yelled, reaching out to grab her.

Clara shoved him back, her eyes wild but focused. "What they buried isn't the truth," she panted, wedging her fingers into the shattered fissure of the casket lid.
