The Truth Uncovered

He noticed something was off immediately. The house felt tense
quiet in a way that didn’t feel normal.

“Where’s Emily?” he asked.

“In her room, probably making another mess,” Vanessa replied casually.

Daniel frowned. He went upstairs and gently knocked before entering. Emily quickly wiped her eyes, forcing a smile.

“Hey, pumpkin
 what’s wrong?”

She hesitated. For a moment, she almost said nothing—like she always did. But something about her father’s gentle voice made the truth slip out.

“My gift
 for you
 it’s gone.”

Daniel knelt beside her. “What gift?”

“The scrapbook
I made it for your birthday
”

A heavy silence filled the room.

Daniel stood up slowly, a storm building behind his calm expression. He walked straight downstairs.

“Vanessa,” he said firmly. “What did you throw away today?”

She shrugged. “Just some junk your daughter made.”

That was it.

Without another word, Daniel grabbed his keys and rushed outside. The garbage truck hadn’t come yet—thank God.

He searched through the trash bags, ignoring the mess, until finally—

There it was.

Crushed. Slightly torn. But still there.

He carefully picked it up, brushing off the dirt as if it were the most precious thing in the world.

Because to him—it was.
