Chapter 6: What Remains

Weeks later, the house felt different.

Lighter.

Warmer.

Safer.

Arthur sat beside Lily on the living room floor, awkwardly attempting to braid her hair.

“You’re doing it wrong,” she giggled.

“I know,” he admitted. “But I’m improving.”

She leaned against him, completely at peace.

“Is she coming back?” Lily asked softly.

Arthur paused.

“No, sweetheart. She’s not.”

“Good,” Lily said simply.

Arthur swallowed hard.

Children understood things adults complicated.

That night, as Lily slept, Arthur stood by the window overlooking the endless city lights.

He had spent his life building an empire.

Winning.

Dominating.

But none of it had prepared him for this truth:

Power didn’t protect what mattered.

Presence did.

Love did.

And sometimes—

Surviving something dark didn’t just break you.

It showed you exactly what was worth saving.

Arthur turned away from the glass and walked back toward his daughter’s room.

This time, he didn’t hesitate.

He stayed.

The End.
