The Car That Didn’t Belong to Her

The black car waited outside the Hawthorne Estate like it had always belonged there.

Emma stood at the top of the marble steps, unsure whether to move forward. The ballroom doors had closed behind her, but the silence of that night still clung to her skin.

Vincent Moretti stood beside the vehicle, expression unreadable. The city lights reflected off the polished hood between them.

“I said my driver would take you home,” he reminded her.

“I said I don’t need it,” Emma replied quietly.

A pause.

Then, softer—almost human—he said, “You shouldn’t walk alone at this hour.”

Emma’s hand tightened around her worn bag. “I’ve been walking alone my whole life.”

That sentence landed heavier than either of them expected.

From behind, the car door opened.

Isabella Moretti’s voice came gently from inside. “Listen to him, dear. He only argues when he cares.”

Emma hesitated again
 then finally stepped in.

The leather seat was too soft. The silence too expensive.

Vincent didn’t sit beside her. He sat across, watching—not staring, but observing like he was trying to understand something he couldn’t categorize.

Halfway through the ride, Emma spoke without looking up.

“Why did you help me tonight?”

Vincent’s answer came after a long pause.

“Because you reminded me of something I thought I lost.”

Emma glanced up slightly. “And what’s that?”

He looked out the window.

“People who still do the right thing when it costs them everything.”

The car stopped in front of a small, dim apartment building.

Before Emma could step out, Isabella gently pressed something into her hand.

A card.

Not a business card. An invitation.

“You’re not done with us yet,” the old woman said warmly.

Emma didn’t understand what that meant.

But the world had already started shifting around her.
