CHAPTER 2: WHAT REMAINS

Mercer House was quieter now.
Not the heavy, suffocating silence from before.
A different kind.
The kind that comes after something broken is finally removed.
The chandeliers still glowed. The marble still shined.
But the house felt… smaller.
More honest.
Logan stood in the nursery doorway, watching Marina sit on the floor with Emma.
No staff. No nanny. No distance.
Just the two of them.
Emma stacked wooden blocks with intense concentration, her small tongue peeking slightly between her lips. Marina watched her like every second mattered.
Because it did.
“You don’t have to stay here,” Logan said quietly.
Marina looked up.
“I know,” she replied.
There was no hostility in her voice anymore. Only caution.
“I’ve arranged everything,” Logan continued. “Legal support. A new place. Whatever you need.”
Marina studied him carefully.
“You’re trying to fix it,” she said.
Logan didn’t deny it.
“I can’t fix what I didn’t see,” he admitted. “But I won’t look away again.”
Emma suddenly turned, reaching both hands up.
“Up,” she said softly.
Marina lifted her effortlessly.
Then Emma looked at Logan.
For a brief moment, something fragile passed between them.
Trust.
Not complete. Not healed.
But real.
She held out one hand toward him.
Logan stepped forward slowly, as if approaching something sacred.
When her tiny fingers wrapped around his, his chest tightened.
“I’m still her father,” he said quietly, more to himself than anyone else.
Marina nodded once.
“Yes,” she said. “You are.”
May you like
But this time—
It meant something he would have to earn.
